Fister vs. redsox.
from espn
Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister takes a sub-2.00 earned-run average to the mound today in search of his first win, against the Boston Red Sox, without backup from his closer.
Jose Valverde will not pitch if the Tigers have a late lead in the 1:35 p.m. Memorial Day opener of a four-game series. Valverde pitched each of the last three days as the Tigers swept a three-game series at Minnesota.
“He is terrific,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of Valverde. “Outstanding
closer, he's an outstanding guy. He takes the ball for me. He told me he'd take it today, if I wanted him to. But I could tell, when I talked to him, that if he got a day off, it would be good for him.”
Ryan Raburn moves up to the No. 2 slot in the lineup, largely because Leyland said he didn't want two left-handed hitters – Quintin Berry and Andy Dirks – at the top of the order against Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubrant (4-2, 3.96). Dirks moves to the No. 7 slot as the Tigers try to add some extra right-handed punch with Fenway Park's Green Monster looming teasingly in left field.
Fister (0-2, 1.84) makes his sixth start of the season, and second against the Red Sox. He started against Boston on April 7, in a 10-0 Tigers win, but suffered a left costochondral strain early in that game. He was not involved in that decision and missed a month with the injury.
