Tigers vs. twins Game Thread April 3

Whelp..so much for going wire to wire this season, and the jury is still out on C by Coke-mittee, IMO.

Despise both the yanks and the bosox, but might follow some of their game tonight, b/c I like to browse their fans' gameday convo threads on ESPN. Wouldn't be surprised if it already has 2-3K+ posts, pre-game.

Almost always very entertaining.

As much as this is on the offense for not getting more than 2 runs....Benoit cant walk the leadoff guy, and Smoker can't let Coke face righties.....those who don't lean from history are doomed to repeat it.

Your right but gotta ask who does this lose really fall on?

Nothing much uglier than leading by SHO throughout most of a game, then the BP coughing up a run or runs late, to make it very snug, then losing it on a walkoff. Especially to a bottom-feeding division rival team, that is expected to lose 90+. For shame, Leyland!!

If we're going to have a closer by committee, why not have Dotel pitch to the righty?

Exactly, 2x....you're 100% right.

What did righties bat against Coke last year and overall career? It has to be outrageous

We have a winner!

That's the million dollar question Leyland can't wrap his $9.99 brain around.
Who would have pitched if the game would have went into extra innings? This is one thing that the closer by committee debate hasn't really touched on. Burning guys for one batter in a close game will run you out of pitchers in a hurry.

Yes there is and it wasn't because he's better in the field IMO. Hunter was regularly taking balls from him to center right. Not that Trout isn't a fantastic fielder, just that they wanted to give their young star the more glorious spot. In the games I watched, Hunter out shined Trout in the field.

It's because Hunter would be a bad CFer, due to his inability to cover all the ground required of a CFer.

Compared to other RFers, Hunter is good defensively, compared to CFers he's not.

Trout is good compared to all OFers.

Very good point, but maybe that is why Leyland didn't cut Don Kelly? >:D

Bullpen had a day off, Smyly and Al Al could have both pitched. Plus Dotel is good for multiple innings.

This was not a 'closer by committee' problem, it was a problem of not using the best guy in that situation.

Also, at this point, Downs is superior to Coke, if a lefty is going to get the ball in the 9th, it should not be the guy struggling with command and having velocity issues.

this is no surprise. The bull pen is not good. get used to this kind of game. It isn't on Leyland...it is on DD not getting any BP help in the off season.

Its ALL on Leyland. Pitching Coke vs righties is inexcusable....

Closer by committee 1 for 2

Coke still can't get righties out
And it's still too damn cold! Warm up already damnit
