DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

With just one more game to go, the 2021 season will be over. And with that, it?s time to turn our attention to the off-season. For the Tigers, it could be very interesting?..

Today, we start a new blog that allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to engage more with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

The Tigers go into the off-season having performed better than possibly expected this year. However, they still finished under .500 and have lots of work to do in order to improve upon this year?s results.

We?ve already seen many changes since the arrival of A. J. Hinch. New coaches, old faces demoted and a slew of minor league coaches and scouts being let go.

This team is still rebuilding and as such, performance throughout the organization is going to be reviewed. At least, let?s hope so.
We do know that A. J. Hinch and a number of his coaches have been asked to participate in a variety of projects that are centered around the development of players at the Detroit level and the minor league system as well.

Here?s your challenge..

Out of the 3 options below, if you could select only one, which will give the Tigers the biggest bang for the buck? Which area is most in need of being improved? Which option is the most pressing to address as it pertains to the desired goal of becoming competitive?

If you could pick only one, which area is the top priority for the Tigers to address this off-season?

1. Continued personnel changes in the Front Office.

2. Focus on changes to minor league player development.

3. Updating/improving the training and conditioning system.

Tigers and white sox tied at 1 each after 4 innings,

Alexander 51 pitches,

On last night's Detroit Tigers' broadcast, Kirk Gibson suggested that the Tigers need to have 8-10 starting pitchers to get through the year. Then he upped it to as many as 12.
This year, the Tigers have used 13 starting pitchers. In the past, it's been as high as 15-16. But if you look at other teams, it's not unusual to have that many. Even with the top teams. "You can never have enough starting pitching" proves true.

Tigers are one team interested in Carlos Correa, whose 7.0 WAR ranks him 3rd in AL. Set himself up nicely. Rangers, Yankees, Twins among others teams likely in an alltime great SS market. In Detroit, there?s an AJ Hinch link.
that F'n Mayday jon heyman

Hmm, lots of assumptions being made here such as the Tigers having "plenty of financial flexibility." Correa isn't going to come to the Tigers just because of A. J. Hinch.
The Tigers have had a number of long years/ record-breaking millions contracts. None of them have worked out very well. Miguel Cabrera's contract is still on the books. Doubtful that the Tigers would exceed even Miggy's contract and immediately add another one.
Chris Ilitch didn't become tied for the #1 richest baseball owner by over-spending. The Tigers have spent tons of $$ behind the scenes and in analytics. They'll use the latter to ascertain which SS will offer the biggest bang for the buck.

The Detroit Tigers have been unwatchable for the past 4 years. But now that they are improving, even playing exciting games, they are unwatchable for a completely different reason.
It's their tv broadcast team. Matt Shepard and Kirk Gibson were discussing the Flintstones cartoon series last night, asking each other which Flintstone they would be. Pretty sure not a single other sports broadcast team does anything like this.

Tyler Alexander goes 6 strong innings, 1 run 4 hits 2 walks 4 K's,

Tigers 2 - 1,

now it's up to the bullpen.....

Hutchison comes in to pitch the 7th and promptly gives up a couple of hits leading to a run and game tied, 0 outs,

bases loaded with 1 out, not going to end well....or they get a double play and they do.

Tigers 5 - White Sox 2: Late rally ends the 2021 season on a high note.
Tyler Alexander was good, and the Tigers bench put together a late rally to lock up their 77th win of the season.

The Tigers were 9-24 on May 7. After that they went 68-61 and that includes losing six out of the last eight. They posted their first winning record at home (42-39) since 2016 and had a winning record against teams that were in playoff contention entering play Sunday (28-25).

THE FINAL GRADES
Totally Tigers

The Tigers have now completed the 2021 season. Let?s finish the evaluation of each player that was started back in May.

This list is indicative of the entire year so far, not just the month of September. Consider it the final grade for each player.

Roster moves have been taken into account. If you don?t see a player, it?s because he has disappeared into the minor league system or has been on the IL for an extensive period of time.

When sorting through the roster, I?m taking into account the entire picture of each player ? slash line, defensive ability and, to a lesser extent, their flexibility/value to the team including the intangibles of leadership, mentoring and mental fortitude. It?s not entirely about the stats. And for the record, if they are a position players, I?m looking at both their offensive and defensive stats.

If he?s a rookie, I?m grading a lot on potential as development is usually not linear and early performance is often not a true indicator of talent.

On Thursday, we?ll further dissect this list and make predictions about who will ? and should ? return next year. So please save your thoughts about the 2022 roster until then.

Now, for the final evaluation of this year?s players??
