SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

This past week, the Detroit Tigers signed a new multi-year contract with Bally Sports Detroit to broadcast their games. While the Tigers have lost viewers every year since 2015, they remain the 14th biggest MLB market.

The Tigers have ranked dead last in MLB tv broadcasters by numerous publications every year over the past 4 years. This year?s reviews are not out yet but in 2020, the Tigers ranked last in analysis 4.3 (out of 10.0), 3.2 in charisma and 4.0 in coherence. It wasn?t even a close contest between them and the #29 ranked team.

Reports have BSD being happy with the Tigers? staffers/reporters and not anticipating changes at this time. Unknown is whether this feeling also applies to the main broadcast team. The choice of broadcasters is a joint effort between BSD and the Detroit Tigers.

It comes down to you, dear fans. This should be all about what you want and need.

How do you feel about the quality of product when you turn on the tv? This is your chance to potentially inspire change or maintain the status quo on what BSD may do. We?ll be forwarding this poll to them so cast your vote, tell your friends to vote here and leave your (respectful) comments of 3-4 sentences if you so choose.

How do you feel about the quality of product put out by the Detroit Tigers in-game tv broadcast team?

1. It's solid.

2. Mostly good.

3. Mostly bad.

4. Unwatchable.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

In a short couple of weeks, the Tigers will officially head into the Hot Stove season looking to improve their roster. While they performed much better than expected in 2021, they still finished below .500. Given their improvement, everyone will expect the team to generate more wins and finish the year above .500.

The roster is still very much a work in progress with lots of holes.

The vast majority of the players are defensively below-average, costing the teams runs. They have been without a viable SS all year and are missing a full-time first baseman. Their top defensive catcher won?t be playing next year.

The starting rotation currently has 3 young/rookie pitchers. There are no veteran hurlers and the team went through 13 different starting pitchers last year.

Offense has been a hit-and-miss proposition. The team ranks #16 in runs with a .242 batting average, also ranked #16. Their OPS ranks #22 at .707.

While the Tigers took series from many of the top teams, they failed to beat their own competition within the AL Central.

Today?s blog addresses these 3 areas and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads.
The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

As illustrated above, the Tigers have concerns with defense, offense and starting pitching. Out of the 3 options below, if you could select only one, which of the three areas do you believe will help generate more wins than the others in 2022?

Which area, if improved, will help generate more wins than the others in 2022?

1. Defense

2. Offense

3. Starting pitching

Here are the offenses that had the lowest ground ball rate in baseball this season:

30. Giants
29. BRAVES
28. DODGERS
27. RED SOX
26. Blue Jays
25. Cardinals
24. ASTROS

Noticing a trend? Teams that win in 2021 are best at getting the ball in the air.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Late last week, Totally Tigers offered 2 different polls focused on the tv broadcast team. On this site, 46% of readers believed that the quality of broadcast was ?mostly bad.?
An additional 29% thought the games were ?unwatchable.? That?s 75% of Tiger fans who are profoundly unhappy watching this broadcast group.

On Twitter, a similar poll was done asking Tiger fans whether the broadcast team should be replaced. A whopping 85% want new faces ? and voices.

Likewise, it?s not just the fans who are unhappy. Professional media organizations have routinely ranked Tiger tv broadcasters dead last in the quality of product that is turned out.

Given the newly-signed contract between Bally Sports Detroit and the Detroit Tigers, one can hope that BSD is now turning their attention to an analysis of what to do about potentially making changes to the tv crew. While changes are mostly under their auspices, the Tigers also have a say in who is selected.

So now it?s time to ask you, the fans who watch these games, what your preferences are when it comes to the play-by-play, color and/or pitching analysis broadcasters. Who do you want BSD to hire?

What kind of broadcasters should BSD hire?

1. Professionally-trained w/no Tiger ties.

2. Professionally-trained play by play w/former Tiger.

3. All w/ties to Tigers, including former players.
