Tigers Gameday.

The Detroit Tigers still do not have a starting pitcher that has a victory this season.
Rick Porcello will try to put an end to that streak today when the Detroit Tigers try to avoid being swept by the Chicago White Sox.
Porcello allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in seven innings in his first start, a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. He struck out four.
The Tigers have several right-handed hitters in their lineup today against left-hander Chris Sale, a converted reliever who made his first career start Monday in a 4-2 victory over Cleveland. Sale allowed one run and three hits, walked two and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings in that start.
Sale is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 10 career appearances against the Tigers.
"He's really good," Leyland said. "He's got a big arm, breaking ball, kind of a funky delivery. He’s pretty impressive."
Current Tigers players are just 3-for-31 (.097) with 10 strikeouts against Sale. Ryan Raburn has a home run off the left-hander, while Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta each have a single.
Leyland inserted right-handed hitters Brandon Inge and Gerald Laird into the lineup to face Sale. Inge will be the designated hitter.

Detroit Tigers' Jim Leyland describes lineup decisions that led to Brandon Inge starting at DH. ..................
oh brother.
from Mlive

As for Jim Price's absence from Tigers booth next 4 games, "he has the same bug going around the team and is wiped out" - Dan Petry is filling in.

Raburn, Inge, Laird and Santiago..ouch. Take the guy who did hit a HR yesterday. In place of KBurn who is batting .80.

Shinebox batting .080, small consolation he isn't playing 2B.

idk, maybe some of this is managing egos....but Leyland says one thing, I will take the best 25 players north, and players have to hit to play, and then all this swill.
Sometimes, I can't help but think the Tigers win a few games 'despite' smokey.

Santiago in the 2 spot....

I think Leylands fucking with us now.

Leyland thinks playing sub par players now will help down the road. But guys like Inge, Laird, Santiago, Worth, Kelly etc will be the same hitters in September as they are now. He just doesn't get it.

whelp, another classic leyland sunday lineup. its like he's trying to get us swept.

Wow, just wow. Shinebox, Inge, and Laird in the lineup together??? Those are the 3 hitters who have given us fans the most grief in the last few years. What's next? Is Todd Jones going to pitch the 9th?

I'm trying to figure out why any of you are even remotely surprised by the Sunday lineups? This has been going on for years. No one likes it but these guys are going to play as long as they are on the roster. Leyland doesn't care if the fans don't like his lineups. We still have holes on this roster so some of these shitbags are going to see the field.

Cringe has started at DH one other time in his big league career. It was April 30, 2002 against former Royals lefty Chris George.

In case you missed it, Tigers not using a DH today.
They're using a DCS -- Designated Check Swinger.
Wojo

Brandon Inge is the DH today, Jim Leyland explained, because Ryan Raburn is in right field to give Brennan Boesch a day off and get another right-handed bat in the lineup against lefty Chris Sale. He?s not going to DH Ryan Raburn or Delmon Young, because all the outfielders on the bench are left-handed hitters. He?s not going to DH Ramon Santiago because he wants the flexibility to shift Santiago somewhere around the infield in case of an injury.

If it?s really that big of a deal to you, look at it this way: If the White Sox go to a right-handed reliever in the late innings, having Inge at DH gives Detroit more flexibility to pinch-hit for him.

For the record, Inge had one other start at DH in his career. That was April 30, 2002, and the opposing pitcher was former Royals lefty Chris George. Inge batted eighth and went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Tigers bullpen is pretty close to full strength today. Collin Balester isn?t available because he filled innings after Adam Wilk?s injury Saturday. Also shelved is Daniel Schlereth, who pitched in each of the first two games of the series.

I hope the dynamic Shinebox, Cringe and Pop Up Laird trio proves us all wrong today, but I suspect they won't.

I just think it's hilarious that Inge couldn't make his debut at home because he'd be booed mercilessly. I honestly hope he plays at home this year after going 0 for on the road, the booing will be something else.

So is Inge a 1st ballot HOFer or is he a unanimous one? That's peoples' problem with him, he actually thinks he's been a good player in recent years.
