i dont get why everyone hates on Laird. sure, he was an awful starting catcher, but he's an excellent backup; he plays awesome defense, calls a good game, and has occasional pop. what more can you ask of a backup catcher?

Me either. He's played in 2 games this year and has and rbi in each so far. That's already more offense than we'd expect from him.

I heard Vin Scully once tell the story about how the whole everybody wearing number 42 came about.

The Dodgers had been getting letters in Robinson's first year with death threats against him, and the Dodgers were having a team meeting about what to do about it, there was a fear that somebody might try to shoot him right on the field during a game.

So one of his team mates - I forget who, I'm pretty sure it wasn't amongst the most legendary of the Boys of Summer, suggested "hey, I have an idea - why don't we all wear number 42, so they won't know which one of us Jackis is?"
