Leyland follows through on his plan to have an all-righty outfield against White Sox lefty Jose Quintana. That includes left fielder Ryan Raburn, who gets the nod to bat second over Omar Infante. Given that Infante had two hits off Angels lefty C.J. Wilson on Saturday, albeit both singles that weren’t well-struck, it’s an interesting shift in thought.
from Jason Beck

With a left-hander pitching for the opposition, Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is stuffing his lineup with right-handed hitters for the series opener against the Chicago White Sox.
Ryan Raburn will bat second and start in left field tonight when the Tigers open a four-game series against the White Sox. Avisail Garcia will start in right field.
Gerald Laird will start at catcher and bat ninth. The lone left-handed hitter in the lineup for the Tigers tonight is Prince Fielder, who will start at first and bat fourth.
Left-hander Jose Quintana (5-4, 3.69 ERA) will start for the White Sox. He has never pitched against the Tigers.
Rick Porcello (9-11, 4.58 ERA) has suffered the loss in each of his past five starts but has not pitched that poorly during that time. The Tigers have totaled nine runs scored in those five games.
Porcello is 5-4 with a 4.95 ERA in 10 career starts against the White Sox, but he has pitched extremely well against them this season.
Porcello is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in three starts against the White Sox this season. He has allowed three runs on 14 hits and two walks while striking out 13 in 22 innings pitched against the White Sox this season.
Paul Konerko (10-for-26, .385, home run), Gordon Beckham (5-for-13, .385, home run) and Dayan Viciedo (4-for-11, .364, home run) have had success in the past against Porcello.
from Mlive

Raburn batting .100; 2-for-20 with five K's in the 2 spot this season. But in his defense, he hits well in cellular field.

Oh boy, Raburn batting 2nd. People, you can't joke around when e-mailing line-up suggestions to Leyland.

Was listening to mlb on XM, and they are also scratching their heads on this, but also said, outside of Jackson, Cabrera, Fielder, no other player he has to put in the lineup, starting or on the bench, has done much on the year.

Raburn has three HR in the past year, all of them at US Cellular. 4 HR since 8/16/11, all vs White Sox. But still, batting 2nd?

Brennan Boesch is only lefty to homer off Chris Sale in 2012, and he's done it twice. Still, Leyland isn't sure he'll start Boesch vs. Sale.

youksuckilis is said to be back with wsox.

Detroit Tigers' Jim Leyland: Starting Ryan Raburn is 'common sense' due to his success in Chicago.
from Mlive

Raburn's career numbers at U.S. Cellular Field are impressive. He is hitting .308 (45-for-146) with eight home runs, 30 RBIs and an .882 OPS in 46 career games here.

But Raburn is hitting .168 (34-for-202) with one home run, 12 RBIs and a .474 OPS in 65 games this season.

Monday's Tigers lineup: Ryan Raburn batting second is 'common sense'.
Jim Leyland stacked his lineup with right-handers against Angels lefty C.J. Wilson over the weekend. Detroit had four hits.
Leyland is doing it again, though.
Eight right-handers will battle White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana in Monday's opener of a critical four-game showdown at U.S. Cellular Field.
The most eye-opening move was not just playing Ryan Raburn, but batting him second. Raburn is hitting just .168, with a .221 on-base percentage, and has hit just one home run this season.
That said, Raburn has a nice history at U.S. Cellular. He's a .308 hitter in 46 career games at the ballpark, with eight homers and 30 RBIs. His only homer this season was at U.S. Cellular.
"Common sense matchup for me," Tigers maanger Jim Leyland. "If he's ever going to get it going, this will be an opportunity."
Rookie Avisail Garcia, 21, will get his fourth career start.
"I'm playing the kid tonight," Leyland said. "Why not?"
Also, Gerald Laird is catching, in for Alex Avila again.
Don't expect the Tigers to be limited to four hits Monday, even though they've only scored six runs total in their last five road games. U.S. Cellular is hitter-friendly, especially with Quintana on the mound. He has a 12.66 ERA over his last three starts, and didn't make it out of the second inning his last time out.
Rick Porcello (9-11, 4.58 ERA) starts for the Tigers against Quintana (5-4, 3.69 ERA).
This week's series easily is the biggest of the season. The White Sox lead the division by two games, and after this series each team will only have 19 games remaining.
Detroit has won the last seven meetings against the White Sox and owns a 10-4 record in the season series.
The Tigers have 23 games remaining this season and 20 are against AL Central Division opponents Chicago, Minnesota and Kansas City. The three remaining games are against Oakland next week at Comerica Park.

Please let Raburn be gone after this season. I for one, have had enough of this nonsense.

Makes sense, all his warning track fly outs make it over the fences in the bandbox called us cellular

Yeah, Peralta too.

That guy hits more balls that die on the CoPa warning track than seems humanly possible. Maybe they both can gets some out.

just in....With the return of right hander Gavin Floyd from injury, Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura announced that Floyd would re-join the starting rotation on Wednesday, opposite Max Scherzer, in the third game of this week?s pivotal series with the Detroit Tigers.
The man who was originally slated to get the ball on Wednesday is southpaw Francisco Liriano, but pitching coach Don Cooper indicated that this isn?t a case of bumping Liriano back a few days or skipping a start; instead, he is expected to be readily available in relief during the series with Detroit. If it works out that he is rested afterward, Liriano may return to the rotation, but that much seems far from certain.

Most important game of the year so far and Raburn bats second. Interesting...

That sucks.

Hopefully the Tigers can get their heads from out of their asses and get to the bullpen, because Liriano is horrible.

Porcello vs. whitesox: gave up 24ER in first 4 GamesStarted - in 20 innings.
He's 5-0 with 2.27ERA last 6 GamesStarted v. whitesox...
3-0, 1.23ERA v. whitesox in 3 GamesStarted this year...

Tigers line of .249/.323/.412 last 28 Games is right at about league avg...but averaging 3.7R/G largely due to .213 avg. with RISP (.296 thru first 111 Games).

Tigers simply have to turn things around on road: 6-15 last 21 Games on road, have lost 6 of last 7 series...still have 4 series, 13 Games left on road.

Leyland said he's batting him second so he can replace him later with Dirks, and also so he's not bunched up with Garcia and Young.

if hes gonna replace him with dirks why not start dirks, lefty or no? its still ****ing stupid. hes basically saying that he doesnt want all of his shitty hitters all in a row, so he thinks its better to move one up in the lineup instead. his logic does not compute.

The only other option for 2 is Infante, who's been mostly shit lately anyhow.

And as bad as the offense has been, I think you have to try Raburn just to see, it's not like you're out much if he fails, and then at least you know.
