Jim Leyland said Wednesday he was probably going to start Delmon Young in left field rather than put Avisail Garcia in left, a spot he hasn’t played much, on the road. Whether it’s the weather conditions or an easier setup to pinch-hit with Dirks or the misadventures Young has had here before, Leyland changed course and moved Garcia, who will start in left for the first time in his pro career.

Avisail Garcia makes debut in left field, Brennan Boesch starts in right field.
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters Wednesday that he was considering the possibility of starting Delmon Young in left field for Thursday's series finale against the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox.
Change of plans.
Instead, Leyland will keep Young at designated hitter and give rookie outfielder Avisail Garcia his first career start in left field.
In the event Young would start in left field tonight, Leyland told reporters Wednesday that he'd likely tab Brennan Boesch as the designated hitter and start Garcia in right field.
But Boesch will make his third straight start in right field, batting eighth, while Garcia, who has made five starts for the Tigers in right field, will hit seventh.
Garcia split his time in Double-A Erie between right and center field, but it appears he has never started a professional game in left field. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters in late August that Garcia could play all three outfield positions, if needed.

With left-hander Chris Sale slated to start the series finale for the White Sox, Leyland has elected to load tonight's lineup with right-handed hitters.
Gerald Laird will spell Alex Avila behind the plate, making Boesch and Prince Fielder the only two left-handed hitters in the lineup.
It's likely Leyland penciled Boesch into tonight's starting lineup over Dirks given his recent success against Sale. Of the three home runs Sale has given up to left-handed hitters this year, two have come off the bat of Boesch.

For the seventh straight game, White Sox slugger Adam Dunn is not in the lineup due to a strained right oblique.
Dunn reportedly tried to swing a bat prior to Wednesday's game and realized he wasn't able to return. He said he'd try again for Thursday's finale.
White Sox manager Robin Ventura will march out the same lineup he used in the first two games of this series with Dayan Viciedo returning to DH and Gordon Beckham starting at second base.
