Casey Crosby and CC Sabathia are both left-handed. But they vary a bit in experience.
Sabathia will be making his 366th career start in the majors and Crosby his first when the two do battle tonight at Comerica Park. It's the first game of a three-game series between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he would give Alex Avila the night off tonight after Avila was bloodied by a foul ball that knocked his mask off in the game Thursday night against Boston. Omir Santos will start at catcher in place of Avila.
Gerald Laird will be the designated hitter for the Tigers. He is hitting .421 (8-for-19) with a home run and four RBIs in his career vs. Sabathia. Miguel Cabrera has fared even better than that. He is hitting .455 (10-for-22) with two home runs, 12 RBIs and seven walks against Sabathia.
Brennan Boesch is 4-for-10 against Sabathia, but every out he has made against the veteran left-hander -- all six of them -- has been by strikeout.

Detroit— Tigers catcher Alex Avila showed no signs of a concussion after taking a hard shot off his mask — the foul tip bloodied the bridge of his nose — and leaving Thursday night's game in Boston.
But Avila still was out of the starting lineup for Friday night's game against the Yankees at Comerica Park.
Recently recalled Omir Santos was scheduled to start at catcher, with Gerald Laird set to be the designated hitter.
Shortstop Jhonny Peralta also was given a break since he is 1 for 17 lifetime vs. CC, and center fielder Austin Jackson (side strain) remained on the disabled list; he was eligible to come off Friday. Andy Dirks continues to be day to day with an achilles problem.
