Today's example of Christians behaving badly

Today we have a special: "Christians Behaving Badly on this day in History"

In 1607, after Venetian scholar Paolo Sarpi argued the power of the Pope should be limited to religious matters, on October 5th the pope sent a bunch of 17th century thugs to assassinate him.

While they were arrested at the border, a later attempt sent by the Pope succeeded in badly wounding him, though he survived.

Here's a good one: Notre Dame cut a secret deal with the Trump Administration to deny birth control to students, faculty and staff. They did this after they tried, and failed to get the same result in court. Link

Because believing an imaginary man in the sky thinks there should be more unwanted pregnancies and more human beings on a planet quickly heading toward a human-caused climate disaster is just sensible policy, after all.

Notre Dame sucks.

The headline is stupid-it sounds like something out of the Onion.

Obviously the deal isn’t all that secret.

When I was in school at Michigan back in the 80s-Obama would have been going to college somewhere at that time himself I guess-every chick on campus just about was on birth control.

Any woman smart enough to get into Notre Dame is smart enough to know how to get birth control with or without Obama care.

That said, I kind of think using birth control should be mandatory for any woman on public assistance.

so now you're using bogus climate science to push your anti-religious beliefs in support of birth control (and presumably abortion too). classic shameless leftism at its finest.

I don?t know...I?m don?t think I?m a classic leftist nor anti-religious and I?m a big supporter of birth control for people who don?t want to get pregnant.

And as I stated above (or something like it) I would support mandatory publicly provided birth control for women on public assistance - way less socially costly than more kids they - not to mention we - can?t afford.

i have no problem with people using birth control. I should have said, forcing people who are morally opposed to birth control to provide it to employees as part of their compensation.

Yeah I agree with that - birth control don?t cost much. If the college you go to don?t provide it, pay for it youself.

That said, I have no problem making taxpayers who don?t agree with birth control subsidizing mandatory birth control for women on public assistance.

Much better for promoting the general welfare than having the situation we have now.

Some people argue they don?t want to pay taxes for the military.

?...provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare...?

the "science" that says man is causing catastrophic climate change that's threatening to overheat the planet.

On average, the temperature has gone up 1?C at a rate much faster that what looks like sudden jumps when the Earth pulled out of ice ages. Much faster than anything we see in Earth's history. There used to be swings of 5-8?, but they happened over 5,000 years, which is long enough for plants to relocate. (Just barely enough for trees to migrate, or maybe it's just barely enough because the only trees that survived could move that fast.)

Coral reefs are home to more biodiversity than any other habitat on Earth. They are the rain forests of the ocean. Something like a third or half of them are dead or dying.

In places where we've been surveying bug populations for decades, we're seeing populations drop by 45-76% across many species around the globe. Of course we're also seeing similar drops in the frogs and lizards the eat the bugs.

Globally, the amount of big animals has been crushed, both on land and in the oceans.

You can argue over how much of all this is due to the temperature rise vs. other things mostly also done by man, but acting like it's bogus science is stupid. There's nothing bogus about it. Even Trump recently said something about it changing, but it will change back. Go ahead and evolve your argument to something about it being more effective to keep the economy strong so we can adapt to the temperature changes and claim that was always your point so you don't have to admit you were terribly, terribly wrong, but don't hang on to this tired and absurd BS. The temperature is changing because of the way we changed the atmosphere.

Googling I see $15-50/month depending on insurance. $50/month is too much for some people.

if $50 a month is too much, then $1200 a month (estimated cost to raise a child) is way out of reach. If you can't afford $50 a month, stop fucking.

I don't disagree with that math, but a lot of the things people like to do cost money. Getting pregnant is free.

Or...or...

Fuck more.

Get out into the streets and turn a trick or two every month.

Get some return on that birth-control investment.

no, it's not stupid, it's a viable alternative view - one that's more grounded in science than the claim that we're warming the planet. The challenges to the groupthink position start with the ways temperatures are measured and they continue all the way through the conclusions drawn. Legitimate skepticism isn't stupid, it's a necessary part of the scientific method and it's COMPLETLY ABSENT from the global warming/climate change "scientific community"

and so many nonscientists who don't understand the scientific method come out spouting untruths about quantity of peer reviewed articles, as if that is meaningful in itself and arguing from the position of authority.

then some people should use condoms or something else. The idea that people morally opposed to paying for someone else's birth control must do so because there are some people who can't afford a particular method is a stupid argument. The government has no business telling companies or individuals to pay their employees by any means other than legal currency. Anything else should be negotiated between the buyers and sellers.

I agree that health care shouldn't be a part of salary. I know why it used to make sense, but things have changed a lot since then.

But given the screwed up state of our system, to then act like an employer should get to line item insurance coverage for their employees is also a bad idea.
