Today's example of Christians behaving badly

It wouldn't surprise me if most of these creeps started as confused gay Catholics. They take "the storybook" way too seriously and fight "being gay". They still have sexual urges after they become priests. They then abuse their power and take advantage of vulnerable boys.

Of course, all they have to do is ask forgiveness and they get a free pass to heaven :)

I don't think sexual orientation has anything to do with it; there are bad straight people and bad gay people.

But I do think that if they allowed to marry, some of the problem would go away, but only because priesthood would no longer be seen as a predator's excuse for why they didn't get married.

also, I think married priests with kids of their own would be less likely to tolerate or even just turn a blind eye to their brethren molesting little kids.

I've read this is wrong (the marriage part.) The kind of people that would do this aren't driven by anything a marriage would impact as an excuse or driver. They are child predators first (not confused gay Catholics - I agree with you on that part), and predators seek out positions with access and authority (religious, coaching, youth activity leaders...)

That's not to say I'd be against priests getting married. I'm more neutral on that. What I'd like to see is women priests/bishops/cardinals/popes. I think that would help more than allowing marriage.

I don't see any reason why women should not also be priests.

also I'm not trying to say marriage is some sort of miracle cure, although I think the empathy from having kids should help.

I would add that when you exclude married people, you're excluding some decent people who would otherwise be willing to do it. And when you do that, you're forced to accept some real sick fucks in order to fill out your ranks.

Maybe if more "normal" people could be priests, they'd be less tolerant of child molesters and abusers?

I think this makes sense in a "sounds reasonable to me" sort of way, but I don't think there are examples from other organizations that support it. The big problem that the Catholic Church has that sets it apart (I think) is the high priority on forgiveness and the secrecy rules involved in confession. I remember being taught that you could confess to killing someone, and they can't turn you in. That rule takes on a very different meaning when it also applies to themselves.

you left out education - way more kids are molested in public schools than anywhere else and in many cases the teachers aren't fired. I'm surprised no one has started a thread about it - I guess when government is your religion, you tend to ignore it's failures.

so you would rather see celibate men and women rather than men only but allowing them to marry?

I suppose I did. I was thinking of specific cases where higher ups knew and swept it under the rug and those were the things that came to mind first.

Yes. I see more of an argument for celibacy (though I'm not solidly sold on it) than I do for gender discrimination.

A little bit of googling shows schools are a huge problem, but not well quantified and part of the problem is the lack of an appropriate central reporting authority.
Of the limited studies I saw summarized, between 80-96% of offenders were male, the median age was 28, same-sex offenders made up 18-28%, and in one study, most male offenders that targeted male victims were either married (presumably to women in 1994) or in heterosexual relationships.

Quite often the pope has to spend several hours in public at events where he is unable to take a pee.

I?m not sure if a woman would be physiologically capable of doing that.

This thread is specifically about Christians behaving badly, but I suppose we could make a thread about "necessary public school reforms to address child abuse in public school."

Plus, they'd have to install women's bathrooms for female priests.

that'll get pricey

Would they really have to though?

If they all self identified as “priest,” and not gender specific, it would seem to me that nothing would have to change.

Um, YEAH.

Dude, the kinda people who becomes priests aren't really the "humble servants of god" they claim to be. they're huge prima donnas.

The first time a male priest sees a bloody tampon in his bathroom, or a lady priest sees pee on the toilet seat, they'll be hell to pay.

I don?t know?for the last couple of years all single stall toilet facilities in the city of Los Angeles are gender neutral, and nothing terrible seems to have come of it.

LA has gender neutral toilets for priests already?

Article from yesterday. The Department of Health and Human Services has a population of separated or unaccompanied migrant children that are vulnerable and have been targeted. 4,556 complaints in under 4 years. The reports don't make it clear who the perpetrators are, so a coverup is suspected.

you could, but you won't because you take no joy in attacking your own religion of big government and all it's failing institutions. There's a reason there's only one thread specifically targeting one group. Of course you will never admit that you're the most hateful bigot that posts here, but it's obvious to anyone who is paying attention.

Name calling is not very Christian...

Hey, I think this is the first time we've had a Christian behaving badly LIVE, in the "Christians behaving badly" thread!
