Guys in my age cohort-I’ll be 59 in October-have all probably read Freehan’s baseball diary, Behind the Mask.

Two letter athlete Freehan-football and baseball-seems to more fondly recall his memories of playing football at Michigan than he did baseball, not entirely unlike the way two time all-state Akron tight end LeBron James more fondly remembers playing high school football than he does playing high school basketball.

Both Freehan and LeBron went pro in a sport they were superior at to football.

Freehan probably fondly remembers getting laid a lot at Michigan, but he didn’t write about that at all, unlike Jim Bouton, who wrote about everyone getting laid all the time.

I don’t think LeBron James has written a book yet about anything.

Ah, Jim Bouton wrote Ball Four. I haven't read it, but I read Jim Brosnan's two baseball books, and Ball Four is often mentioned in the next sentence to those as the more... detailed... story of what it's like to be a professional baseball player. The Long Season and Pennant Race leave a lot up to the imagination.

Bill wrote about McLain flying his own plane on road trips, Mickey Stanley making early-a.m. dentist appointments, and Gates Brown saying "me too, skip?" When Mayo Smith threatened to fine any player $200 if they got sunburned on a day off. I read it 50 years ago so details are fuzzy. Something about Kaline in the hot tub with a beer and a high-pitched voice.

Bouton's account was far more detailed and entertaining: Mantle slamming bus windows on kids asking for autographs, the Fred Talbot paternity suit letter, Joe Pepitone asking Bouton to not attempt pickoffs at first because there were too many white shirts in the crowd -- never mind this was in a World Series game, and, of course, Norm Miller's confession that he liked to hide in laundry bags. And a great account of the Harmonica Incident that sparked the Yankees' 1964 rally to the AL pennant. Oh ? and Ray Oyler getting hit square in the nuts with a thrown ball and Joe Schultz laughing so hard he "had to take his glasses off." Whatever that means.

EDIT: Playing in the opener at Sicks' Stadium while construction crews were installing bleacher seats in the outfield for people to sit in. Talk about having your seat made-to-order. And the most difficult aspect of being a big league player: "Explaining to your wife why she needs a penicillin shot for your bacterial infection." Oh: and players not telling their wives they got per diem for meals.

The Bouton-"Talbert" (sic) tension is especially rich: "Take the next cab, you communist" comes from that book. And the greenies. Everyone did 'em, chasing them with Budweiser. Bouton outed Mantle on his alcoholism in the book and there was enmity between them for decades.

And maybe one of the best ending lines have ever read. Something like: "You see, you spend a good part of your life gripping a baseball, never realizing it was the other way around all the time."

Oh ? and the sequel: I'm Glad you didn't Take It Personally is nearly as good as Ball Four ? the flak Bouton got was substantial, and the Doug Rader Birthday Cake Affair is pure gold.

When I play the baseball name game with others, I rely heavily on the 1969 Pilots' roster.

huh. wikipedia says Bouton was also a McGovern delegate in 1972, and in 1968 was part of a committee at the Olympics to protest the inclusion of Apartheid South Africa in the games. Good man.
