tOfficial MICHIGAN v Vanderbilt Series Thread

Tell me more, please. any other stories about it?

I've been kicking around an idea about buying some land up there, and building a house to retire in; it's the least developed part of Michigan. I am curious about what it's like. It's one of the few parts of Michigan I've never been to.

It looks quaint, but I don't know if all the people are in-bred psychotic conspiracy theorists

Screw Any place but out west. Buy a piece of land between mountains, and away from people if at all possible lol! Get some horses and dogs and cats and other cattle ranch critters but don?t be a cattle ranch! Just buy the land !

Stay away from the super volcano under Yellowstone though!

I'm not very familiar with the area ...it was just the closest 5A athletic rival to TC so we played them in everything and things typically got chippy. Always seemed Alpena was more 'rural' than TC, perhaps because it's not a tourist destination. Someday we will build on the land we bought in Northport and yesterday heard our new "neighbor" complained the grass is too high, so we had to hire someone local to go mow it. Hadn't really thought of that but luckily the mowing season up there is only a few months long.

Wasn’t the movie “American Pie II” set in Traverse City?

As I remember, all the kids had gone off to various colleges-some went to State, some went to Michigan, others went elsewhere-and they got together during the summer in Traverse City.

It was set in Michigan, but I thought Grand Rapids for some reason. TC isn't that populated of an area to have suburbs and what not like that, like in the movie.

The Lake Huron coast is less developed than the Lake Michigan coast, and that far north, it's even less so. It's not near I-75, and looks like you have to go up US-23 all the way to get there, so no easy connections to Detroit or bigger cities.

Not sure why... the east coast is less developed. I gather there are less sandy beaches on the east coast of the state, and Lake Huron is colder than Lake Michigan... maybe that's it? Less tourism?

I met a grand total of one (1) person from Alpena in my life; she was nice. she was amazed when I knew where it was, and pointed to the right part of my hand
to show it.

The creator writer for the first one Adam hers, it?s from East grand rapids, and that?s where the first one is set, except they call it east great falls in the movie and they?ve changed the name of the high school a little bit also.

American pie two is not set in their hometown-they rented a beach house up the coast. I thought it was Traverse City, but it wasn?t that far north.

There was an episode of Home Improvement shot on Suttons Bay as Tim Allen was a P/T resident of the area back when and there are still some "celebs" who live in the area or keep a second home. Part of the attraction of NW Michigan vs the East side is the history of Chicago, the timber barons who were first in the area near TC and the closer proximity to Chicago.

I also think the "3rd Coast" story is appealing ...NW Michigan is touted as like NorCal but cheaper and with sunsets that rival anything I've ever seen in Cali or Hawaii. Accessibility is probably also part of it ...Alpena isn't near much.

I knew a kid when I was living in Vail who was from Alpena. Rob Bok, a "pro snowboarder"

Got it.

Now I remember I actually saw the first two movies, but it was a long time ago, and due to the passage of time, I forgot they were two separate movies. I thought they rent the beach house as part of the first one. You can forgive my mistake maybe, since they're basically the same movie: same characters, no plot, same teen-sex-grossout jokes, etc.

Yeah, the west coast of Michigan has more Chicago money in it, and star power (Hemingway was a Chicagoan/Oak Park specifically). I knew a fair amount of Detroiters that vacationed in TC though, so it gets mixed eventually, as you go north. And yeah, the sunsets.

But the east coast has the sun rises, which are nice too, for the early risers (or those out partying all night).

And they made two more teenage classics just like them, even though technically they had all become adults by then.
