Get StartedThere were no decent second basemen out there, unless you wanted Jamey Carroll. Kelly Johnson would have been nice but he never became a FA.
Corner OF what somewhat limited too, and we had every reason to think Boesch would be serviceable, and even perhaps Young.
The only significant holes we had at the start of the season were in the 5th starter spot, bullpen, and DH.
Calling the Prince signing dumb is easy after you waited to see how it played out, let's not pretend like you knew it all along.
And if it's a bad signing it's only because we might have trouble re-signing Cabrera or Verlander later because of Princes contract.
No, and that's what I meant by maybe Princes signing hurts us, as opposed to what the OP said.
Why? And I'm not trying be a smart ass but does Detroit have a cap limit they want to stay under? You assume we won't be able to keep certain guys or sign anyone else because of the cap because we signed Prince.
How would anyone else know this?
Plus you can get good players that cost little, just need to be smart about it. Personally though I still like the Prince signing. Consider some of the other first year guys who switched leagues he's not too bad. And eventually I expect him to Rake.
It's not about a cap Mitch. It's about how much into the red the Tigers are willing to go, from a business standpoint. We have 3 20+ mil a year players, 1 is locked up long term, two are going to be FA's in the next few years, signing Prince does not mean we wont be able to sign them, but it probably limits what we can do as far as addressing holes in our roster via free agency because we have to save room for Miguel and Justin.
I have no problem with Princes numbers (offensively) and I actually dont mind his signing, but it will be something they have to work around in the future, and yes, you can get good players cheap, but it's pretty rare. Plenty of bad players wind up getting signed for too much, than good players for the cheap.

There are some very concerning issues with Fister... His fast ball his dipped big time. I am worried that he is still pitching a tad hurt... I agree with SM we need to get BB the hell out of right field.. I don't think RS is a everyday player so a second basemen would be nice.. We are going to need a SP... I guess Carlos Quentin fits the bill for dh/of
I love the Prince signing, the Tigers time to win is now, and that is evident in the farm system right now. If the Tigers can't hold on to their expensive past prime stars, is it that big of a deal? Just means the Tigers will get better draft picks and restock the farm system like every other team to prime themselves for another run in 5 years or so.
There isn't a cap, but the Tigers are not the Yankees and can't afford to keep restocking with big free agents unless Dan Gilbert takes over for Mr. I.
One of the biggest thing this organization needs to do is draft better so instead of having to sign star for big contracts, they can just call them up from the minors when they are ready.
Wait...are you saying Cabrera and Verlander will be past prime?
And draft better? Drafting is a crapshoot, except the very top picks, which you only get if you suck for a long time like the Royals, Pirates, etc.
The fact that they will be both 32/33. How many players are still in their prime at that age?
Also, if drafting is such a crapshoot, why are the Yankees, Rays, and Oakland always seemingly having top prospects come up?
The Tigers just need a different philosophy when it comes to positional players, instead of drafting and signing 5-tool players, and draft kids that can straight up hit. Draft more players like Nick Castellanos, players that can hit, but need time to develop power and fielding. How many players like Daniel Fields' have the Tigers had?
The elite guys are. This is baseball, not an NFL RB.
Please provide me some examples of a player in his prime at the age of 32/33.

Arod won MVP in 2009 at age 34.
Roger Clemens won 4 Cy Youngs after the age of 35
Randy Johnson won 4 Cy Youngs after the age of 32
Barry Bonds won 4 MVP's after age 36.
Cal Ripken made 9 All-Star teams after the age of 33.
Paul Konerko's best two seasons came at age 35, 36.
I can provide a shitload more examples if you like, but it's pretty obvious what the outcome of this discussion is.
Clemens and Bonds were both on steroids/HGH and All Star teams don't mean jack shit.
