Trout $430M contract

Outside of some catastrophic injury, Trout should be worth every penny.

Top 10 Annual MLB Local TV Revenue

1. NYY - $385 Mil (thru 2033)
2. LAD - $334 Mil (thru 2039)
3. PHI - $200 Mil (thru 2041)
4. TEX - $155 Mil (thru 2035)
5. LAA - $147 Mil (thru 2030)
6. SEA - $141 Mil (thru 2032)

8. BOS - $114 Mil (thru ????)
9. CHC - $84 Mil (thru 2019)
10. TBR - $82 Mil (thru 2033)

Most of the same teams in the top 10 in local TV revenue are also in the top 10 for fan attendance. They are traditionally teams that can afford to resign their own free agents, or go pay money for someone else's.

LAA can certainly afford Trout. The question is should they have? If it wasn't them, another team would have paid him the money.

essentially the LAA gave him a 10 year $360M extension that takes him through his age 38 season.

And saved $14.50 Mil over the next two years in the process.

I didn't notice that they did that. I guess that helps pay for Albert Pujols and the $87M they owe him over the next 3 seasons. Man, the Cardinals were smart for not signing him.

ANGEL IN THE OUTFIELD.
Totally Tigers

3 big paydays, 2 are stinking it up and one is on a losing team again. And I actually think we make the playoffs and do something significant quicker than they do.

I doubt the Tigers do anything significant for quite some time. I would be very surprised if they make the playoffs while Miggy is still here.

Maybe not but I'm sure Miggy would be the reason. This org. is hell bent on being cheap, Miggy or no Miggy. Their 25-man payroll is like 68m. Which is stupid low. Goes up to about 100m counting injuries.

The Angels though just never get it right. And with a much higher payroll and a ton of money for someone who like everyone else and won't be worth it in those later years.. They might make the playoffs before Detroit, might - I can't see them doing something in the playoffs though. Angels stink even worse than us..

well, when you are re-building, your payroll is supposed to be low.

Their team payroll is about $117M which is 20th.

On the other extreme...the Tampa Bay Rays have the lowest payroll and the best record in baseball. They are doing it with great pitching and without a single offensive star.

Who said that? You can rebuild and spend money.. 20th is low. The Rays having 1 good year after a bunch of crap doesn't change that fact. You don't need to get the high end FA's but we scraped the bottom with some of the guys and whoever decided Jacoby should still be on a ML club is beyond me.

Can't wait until Zimmerman and his 25m is gone. Too bad we have him next season. I'd cut him anyway.

If you are an owner and know you aren't going to be able to compete for a few years, why would you spend just to spend? I think the idea behind a re-build is to not only re-build your major league club but get young prospects to re-build your farm system. I think the best way to re-build is to really suck for 3-5 years and get some top 3 picks. Playing .480 ball isn't going to get that done. I would much rather the Tigers have the worst record in baseball this year than be mediocre.

I agree with wanting Zimmerman gone, but I wouldn't cut him.

That's a strategy ala Houston Astros'. But as a fan it stinks. Even with an inept offense 15-16 is pretty cool. 9-24 would not be. Which brings up for every Houston team from bottom dwellers to winners you get two Miami teams. No guarantee that strategy will work. Remember we've got Avila as our GM.

If Zimmerman is crap & you have a better option I don't see a reason to keep him. Just takes up a roster spot as this point.

you may get your wish with Zimmerman. He is trying to rehab his elbow injury. He just began throwing (not pitching). I have a gut feeling that his rehab isn't going to go well and he will have TJ surgery. If that happens, he will never pitch for the Tigers again.

Payroll last 5 years

DET $771.2 ($154.2 avg, high $199.9 Mil in 2016)
LAA $747.8 ($149.6 avg, high $181.6 Mil in 2017)

TBR $316.1 ($63.3 avg, $79.5 Mil in 2017)

Attendance last 5 years

LAA 15,164.6 MIL (3.033 avg)
DET 12,315.6 MIL (2.463 avg)

TBR 6,428.2 MIL (1,286 avg)

Record last 5 years

LAA 417-393 .515 WPCT (83-79 avg)
TBR 388-415 .483 WPCT (78-84 avg)
DET 378-430 .468 WPCT (76-86 avg)

Operating Income Last 5 Years (i.e. Profit)

LAA $157.2 Mil ($31.4 Mil per year)
TBR $86.4 Mil ($17.3 Mil per year)

DET -$84.2 Mil (-$16.4 Mil per year)

Any payroll over $125 Mil for DET will lose money, unless they make the playoffs. They do not draft well and they hold on to their pending Free Agents too long. TBR draft well and they trade their players at just the right time. They also get other team's players and make them better. They can operate on half the payroll DET does and win more games. Money isn't the issue.

Tampa Rays signed Morton for 15/yr. Yes they have a lower payroll but they signed a good player. We could have done that and stayed under 125. But we signed a bunch of 4-6m players that no one else wanted. I get they have better management. Imo, always better to win 80 games than 65 games. Win 80 and you're on the cusp so you sign a good player.. Not so with 65, teams don't try and get good players at that point.

Mr. I understood. He was the best.
