Turner to start today @ Lakeland

Sure would've been nice to have him available with Fister going down, but I'll take what I can get.

Speaking of Fister, what's the latest word on his injury. I heard he tweaked it last week(?) but haven't heard his prognosis since.

Wont pitch until May is what I read.

But I'm not sure Turner could do any better than the three rookies from Toledo that have come up, Wilk, Smyly, and Below have all done pretty well considering.

Thanks.

Smyly and Below are definitely showing they belong. I just would have rather had Turner than Wilk, but Adam didn't do too badly against Chicago. He does throw strikes at least.

Wilk sucks, and I don't understand why they won't let Below start.

He's the best option, and a SP is certainly more valuable than a long relief pitcher.

My original thought was they wanted to insert somebody who was already stretched out, but Below went out and threw 6 innings anyway (only 68 pitches, fwiw).

But yeah, it does look like Wilk's throwing BP most of the time.

Throwing a high 80s fastball can work when you have good secondary pitches and great control, (Moyer is still making it work because he's still got an excellent changeup), but Wilk just doesn't have either attribute.

I've seen guy work in the BP effective that get moved to the rotation and stink. Just because he did alright in the pen doesn't mean he'll be effective as a starter. You just never know. Our BP is bad enough, why not let him stay there.

Eh, he was a starter in the minors as recently as last year, most of the failed RP-SP experiments are due to trying to move people who don't have the repertoire to be a SP, because most RPs only develop 1 or 2 pitches, and you need more to survive as a starter, unless both pitches are elite like a Kershaw.

And I'd move him because long RP, as he's being used as, generally come in for one of two situations.

1. When there is an injury to the SP, and that really doesn't happen that often, not enough to justify keeping somebody there solely for that reason.

2. When the SP shits the bed and gets pulled early, like Porcello against Texas, and that is a game in which you lose >95% of the time.

I just don't see the point in keeping Below in that role when he could provide more value as a SP until Fister comes back, have him and Wilk switch roles.

Fair enough, though I think Symly and Wilk have been fine so far.

Nobody is suggesting they should do anything differently with Smyly.

Yeah, Smyly has been great so far, he'll be on an innings limit this year, but I think he's got a good chance of staying up here all year as a SP.

Wilk, eh, I think he'll continue to get knocked around, he just doesn't have what it takes.

I don't mind keeping Below where he is because of games like Saturday.

Was he a bullpen/life saver or what? Those were 6 huge innings out of him.

But as pointed above, it was a game we got squashed.

Considering that the bullpen had to pitch 8 innings in the 24 hours following that game, I'd say Below's appearance held quite a bit of value.

You can always find LR even if they're not good just to eat innings. But it wasn't value since we got blown away. He didn't pitch in a meaningful game. I'm not sure I want him starting or staying in the pen myself. But LR is usually a waste for a quality pitcher.
