picked up where he left off in the playoffs

Only a game and because we won it doesn't really matter.

:yay:

I'm not digging the trend and Im counting where he left off in 2011. Its no secret that Tigers need better bullpen.

Yeah, we need a better closer than the best closer in baseball in 2011 for sure.

Seriously, Day 1 of the 2012 season, and the idiotic posts are just racking up.

Valverde did not close out 2011 very well at all

Agree that the thread is ridiculous, but Valverde was not the best closer in 2011. I don't think that blown saves is the only criteria for a back end reliever, and Valverde was not near the top of any other stat. How a closer performs in close games is important, too.

Disclaimer - Valverde was solid last year, I'm not saying he was lousy.

Can't count playoffs or Verlander would suck. In reg. season, he was perfect for what closer is suppose to do. Save games.

He is suppose to not blow saves. Maybe a 1.8 era would look sexier but he did what he had to. And btw, look at his era when he was in a save situation. Very good.

Either did Cabrera, did he shit the bed too?

Seriously, we have a "sky is falling" post after a win.

SMH

forgive me, eights innings of two hit ball--get it done and not count on bottom of the ninth heroics. Yes, its one game and the first game of the year, but i remember all too well valverdes playoff performance last year--or there lackof.

Wins are wins. If you're tied in the ninth and lose, it counts the same as if you are a run ahead and lose.

Where is it written in stone that a closer is only supposed to "save games"? That's like saying a starting pitcher is only supposed to "win games". Certainly, you don't think that, right?

So last year, Miguel Valverde and Verlander sucked. Because they were bad in the playoffs.

So who you want, 20 starts 20-0 with 4.2 ERA. Or 20 starts, 6-14 2.87 era?

And no, I'm not saying the 6-14 isn't the ace any longer etc. But its the most important, wins.

Nice logic.

Obviously, the first stat is from a great team and the second is likely from a poor one. But, the second pitcher is better, probably. If he was on the first team, he's probably be 28-2 with a 2.87 ERA while the other pitcher would be 4-19 on the second team.

I'll play, too.

Would you rather have a closer with zero blown saves and a 2-12 record, or a closer with 5 blown saves but a 12-2 record? By your own statement, the first pitcher is the "better" closer.
