Now for the Jose Reyes update.

as @DKnobler said, #tigers people are weighing run at reyes, whod be good for their park. & peralta hits enough to play 3b

looks like we may make a run at him.

Basically says Jose Reyes fits the Tigers and even when DD says thing are impossible Illitch makes it possible.

id be pumped....that lead off spot was key for us this year. That 2-3 weeks AJax went on a tear just lifted our offense to a whole nother level. Consistent production out of that spot would be huge not to mention the ability of him to move into scoring position with SBs infront of cabrera and vmart. Pay the man...

I've seen Illitch do it before and i wouldn't be surprised to see it again

i really hope we dont get him, he's far too expensive and leg-injury prone for my tastes. how can we trust a guy who has had numerous hammy problems the last few years to stay healthy and productive enough to be worth the ~18-20mil a year he'll want? no thanks.

besides, between him verlander and cabrera, we really cant afford to have $60 million/year tied up in just three players. we're not the yankees.

why not? i didnt know there was a salary cap in baseball? Illich isnt going to last much longer...let him spend his money the way he wants and try to go out a winner. No way our lineup outscores some of the other high powered teams in the AL in its current state.

yeah we can't plug in a couple average players and expect to compete with the rangers

We were outscored by the yankees too...by a lot. Not to mention did you happen to catch the world series?....STL smoked TEX relievers. We couldnt hit them to save our life. Our offense was putrid pretty much the entire post season.

He fits the 3 things the Tigers are looking for this offseason. 1) Speed in the field and on the bases. 2) True Leadoff hitter and 3) A 3B by moving Peralta over

one good player does not solve the number of holes we have. id rather fill all our holes with a few good players than blow our load on reyes.

we can always fill them with Kelly Johnson, Jamey Carroll, and Erik Bedard/Roy Oswalt/Aaron Harang. Or we can fill 3B with Jose Reyes by moving Peralta over and signing Kelly Johnson/Aaron Hill to fill 2B and promote Drew Smyly to the 5th spot.

As for the Peralta can't play at 3B, he is a professional baseball player, he can play anywhere

He might want to complete. And too many worry about money. Its not yours and there is no cap. I'd be estatic if we signed Reyes.

Sure no salary cap, but there is a limit.

And that limit becomes severely reduced if we sign Reyes to the kind of contract he is likely to want.

Which would mean our bullpen wont improve really, and no chance of landing a 5th starter any better than Penny.

And our already weakened farm takes a hit because Reyes is a type-A free agent, which means we lose our first round pick in 2012.

There is also some question of his durability.

So like Spock said, can we really afford to have 60 million tied up in 3 players.

I think it's smarter to get more value for the money, pick up serviceable 2b, 3b, 5th starter, and a bullpen arm or two.

Illitch said he was willing to sign TWO big time free agents.

Let's sign Reyes (one) and split that other money for the other big time FA on a 2B, relief pitcher and 5th starter.

The 5th starter might not even be needed. Our 5th starter this year did little besides eat innings and the farm could fill the need.

Reyes adds a leadoff hitter, speed, and an infielder. That's 3 holes filled with one player.

Let Illitch do what he wants with his money. He wants to win now when he is alive.

Go Tigers!

I'd be absolutely thrilled to get Reyes. Not worried about his injuries, it's baseball, not football. Would love our park and immediately make us a lot better. I think Jhonny would be fine going over the 3rd for a player like Reyes. Make a run at him!!!

Do not underestimate the fact that Iltch wants to win a WS before he dies.

Also, I think the Tiger Brass knows that a couple Tigers had career years in 11' and they know they can't expect them to duplicate there years in 12'. We need to improve our lineup to win the Central again, period.

i think the splashes we can make would be to

1) trade for brett gardner (assuming NY would sign beltran or something), or sign dejesus while non-tendering young
2) trade for chase headley to replace inge/kelly at third, cut inge but keep kelly as utility as long as leyland doesnt overuse him
3) sign kelly johnson to play 2nd.

that would vastly improve our offense while also improving defense at each position.

Gardner LF
Headley 3B
Avila C
Cabrera 1B
Martinez DH
Boesch RF
Peralta SS
Johnson 2B
Jackson CF

that would be a solid lineup top to bottom. we'd have to part with some pieces to get headley and gardner, but we're fairly rich in starting pitching and could afford to give some up to get offensive/defensive pieces. i think gardner will only be available if NY signs beltran or something though. in his stead id get dejesus and keep him leadoff. if we couldnt get kelly, id be ok with jamey carroll.

MUCH rather Peralta OR FAR better still, move the oft-injured Reyes to a less physically strenuous spot @ 2B, then platoon someone with Inge @ 3rd, then maybe trade for a 3B in '13 or Nick Castellanos will be ready?

i dunno if castellanos will even stick at 3B, i have a sneaking suspicion he'll end up as a corner OF.

I really think Mr. I is gonna spend more than he probably should over the next few years trying to win a championship. If so, more power to him and I'll be the last to complain about that. I think after he passes that Dan Gilbert is gonna be our next owner. I'd love that as well.

And what is that limit? If you know share it. Bottom line we have no idea. But we need If. More than OF, more than a SP and more than RP. And i don't want Inge full time, part time or defensive replacement. He's junk.
