Verlander tweet/Jose Reyes Update

When do the Catchers and Pitchers report, I'm getting excited already. 2012 is our year. LOL.

Watch football and enjoy. The first year in a long time after about game 5 I'm not saying "well at least we have the Tigers in 5 months".

The 2011 Luxury Tax threshold is $178 Mil.

DET had to pay the tax in 2008. The threshold was $155 Mil that year. DET had an Opening Day Payroll of $137.7 Mil, but finished the season with $160.8 Mil.

DET has averaged a little more than 2.5 Mil in attendance over the last 3 years. At $29.32 as the average cost of a ticket, that equates to roughly $75 Mil in projected attendance revenue. Add in another $50 Mil in other revenue (media, concessions, etc), and DET is bascially losing money with a payroll over $125 Mil. Unless of course they significantly raise ticket prices.

NYY = $192.3 Mil in just ticket revenue. They get another $50 Mil a year from YES Network. The other revenues pay their luxury tax. So, they could afford a $242 Mil payroll and still make money.

When a team cannot sustain a high payroll based on revenues, it leads to a "fire sale", regardless if they win the World Series (i.e. Florida Marlins).

Long term success does not come by overpaying players like Crawford and Reyes. It is using the money wisely and knowing when to hold or walk away.

WOTS is that the Mets are going to offer him 4 years like 12 mil per. They won't be resigning him. The Marlin's want another starter, they will sign CJ Wilson. They won't be signing him. The Nationals want either Pujols or Fielder. They won't be signing him they also have Ian Desmond. The Giants don't have enough money. The Mariners want Prince and will likely get him, so no Mariners. So that basically leaves us if we offer him something in the ball park of 5 years 15 mil per

I'll take being the Florida Marlins. Win a WS, fire sale, win a WS, another fire sale.

Who the **** is talking about long term success? We havent even had short term success. Until we went on a tear the last 2 months of the year we didnt even know if we were going to be in the playoffs. We havent had "success" since 1984. thats long term suck. Let they dude splurge and loose money for a couple years before he dies...atleast his fans will be happy.

If the mets sign reyes than wright will be gone...so theres a lot of moving parts and decisions to be made there.

Sure no salary cap, but there is a limit.

And that limit becomes severely reduced if we sign Reyes to the kind of contract he is likely to want.

Which would mean our bullpen wont improve really, and no chance of landing a 5th starter any better than Penny.

And our already weakened farm takes a hit because Reyes is a type-A free agent, which means we lose our first round pick in 2012.

There is also some question of his durability.

So like Spock said, can we really afford to have 60 million tied up in 3 players.

I think it's smarter to get more value for the money, pick up serviceable 2b, 3b, 5th starter, and a bullpen arm or two.

And what is that limit? If you know share it. Bottom line we have no idea. But we need If. More than OF, more than a SP and more than RP. And i don't want Inge full time, part time or defensive replacement. He's junk. [/quote:i6amrlly]

Keep him around for playoff time ;)
