Calvin Johnson - where do you rank him all time??

I say 3rd right now......behind Rice and Moss. However, if #81 has 2 more 1,000 yard seasons in him......I'd put him #2.

his career is far from over so it is hard to say. Right now he ranks 43rd in receptions, 27th in yards and 22nd in TDs

No way I have him in the top 3. Rice, Moss...even T.O. would be ahead of him. I would put guys like Tim Brown, Loton, Carter ahead of him as well.

He has a lot of work to do to get into the top 5

Id say hes top 5-10 all time. I think if he can play another 3-5 years, he could solidify himself as a top 3 receiver.

For as dominate as hes been for the majority of his career, his all time numbers are very very good, but not enough to crack the top 5 IMO.

Receiving Yards: Hes at 11,482 (No. 27 all time). 4,500 more yards will put him #2. 2,600 more yards will put him in the top 10

Receptions: CJ Has 721 (No. 43 all time). He would need another 400 to crack the top 10, and 150 to crack the top 15

Touchdowns: CJ has 82 (No. 22 all time). He needs probably around 30 more TD to crack the top 10, but is 45 TD away from the top 10, and 70+ away from top 3.

Silly stat of the day - Megatron would need to double all of his current stats to beat rices records...Rice is probably the best Football player of all time...period.

CJ yards: 11,482 Rice Yards: 22,895
CJ Rec: 721 Rice Rec: 1,549
CJ TD: 82 Rice TD: 197

Eh, overall numbers mean less to me than how he produced when healthy and in his prime. Rice was simply the best. Amazing hands, route running, good run after the catch......smartest player on the field.

Moss was simply the best deep threat of all time. Amazing at tracking the ball in the air and coming down with it without breaking stride.

I don't think T.O., Carter, Brown, Lofton, Harrison, Bruce or anyone else was as good in their prime as CJ was in his. In fact, you can make a very good argument that CJ was the best of all time while in his prime.

I see your point, I do, but I look at it differently. Craig Biggio has more hits than Rod Carew or Ted Williams......but I don't consider him a better hitter. Emmitt Smith has more rushing yards and TD than Barry Sanders.....but there is nobody on this planet that could convince me that Smith was a better RB than Barry.

I take both into consideration. CJ really only had 3 or 4 great years. 2008, 2011-2013. He only led the NFL in a significant category 4 times. TDs in 2008, yards in 2011 & 2012 and receptions in 2012. To be in the top 10 I think you need to be dominant and be great over a long period of time.

All time ranking should include important wins. He has none. top 10 sure....but hed be like 6-10 for me. Also, if this year is any indication....hes on the downside of his career much faster than anyone in my top 5. Being that big takes a toll and im sure itll be harder and harder to stay healthy for full seasons moving forward. I don't really remember the last time hes had a full season of health. Sure, he hasn't missed any games this year....but the guy clearly isn't healthy....he basically doesn't have any ankles left lol.

He wasn't even a top 5 WR this year in the NFL....and itd be a stretch to get him in the top 10.

I don't count "wins" for a WR like I do for a QB.

I think big bodied WRs seem to break down faster than the smaller guys.

Every WR puts up big numbers now. Big numbers aren't hard to get and wont be hard to get moving forward. In order to be in "the top all time" they will need to start using something to separate all these guys with huge numbers. For me...that would be meaningfull wins in the playoffs up to and including the superbowl. Lions players don't sniff that. CJs big number are a product of staffords big numbers. I see Stafford as a top 20 qb in the league....so why should I place a higher importance of CJ having big numbers? I do see him as a special talent....much moreso than Stafford is....but as people have said in this thread it was only for a short period of time and theres a chance that time has passed.

I know I'm the weird one, but I say #3 behind Rice and Tim Brown.

I put him ahead of Moss because I really feel Moss got in his own way too damned much. He had a phenomenal amount of talent, but as for being an all around football player and a guy you want on your team... there's about 10 guys I would take ahead of him.

I put guys like Michael Irvin and TO ahead of him....put up the numbers and it equated to success for their team.

Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison are a tough call for me. Megatron clearly had more talent. Reggie Wayne/Harrisons teams were much better and they both have more receptions.

I lump megatron in with Andre Johnson.

Chris Carter and Tim Brown???

Its a tough list to configure...

Rice
Moss
TO
Harrison
Irvin
Brown
Carter
Wayne/Megatron/A Johnson???

Brown and Carter I give the nod due to longevity....they were just better for longer...period.

Ps...this is subject to change if calvin remains healthy and kills it for another 5 years. It would surprise the shit out of me if he did....but if he can figure out how to sustain a high level of productivity for another half decade he moves up the list no question.

PSS if we include TEs I put tony gonzalez ahead of him and Gronk will surpass him.

Maybe top 5-10 in the last 20 years. But it's easier to get yards and TD's now a days. But guys like Don Hutson, Steve Largent, Lynn Swann etc. don't get the accolades anymore.

No Fitz?

Ya tough call there though....to me fitz is megatron with less talent/freakish ability and ran into the same brick wall. Fitz really hasn't been fitz for like 2-3 years now and his team saw a resurgence mainly because they have a top 5 defense. He put TDs up this year but hes got like 2-3 guys at or above his "talent"/production level right now on his team alone.

Top 10 for sure... how he ends up the next few years depends on how high he moves up on the list..

My top 10 list:

1. Jerry Rice
2. Tim Brown
3. Calvin Johnson
4. Michael Irvin
5. Lynn Swann
6. Randy MOss
7. Terrell Owens
8. Steve Largent
9. Marvin Harrison
10. Chris Carter

I left off Don Hutson because he was way before my time and since there is no real apple to apples way to compare the stats, I just can't say. I struggled with James Lofton vs. Chris Carter.

Hutson, I agree with your reasoning. But 1200 yards in 1942 (only 11 games). That's impressive. Plus he played defense as well.
