Hutson, I agree with your reasoning. But 1200 yards in 1942 (only 11 games). That's impressive. Plus he played defense as well.
Yep, I know. But the game has changed so dramatically from his day. There's just no way to accurately compare the game he played in, and his stats, against modern players.
To be 100% honest, given that he was a two way player, racking up the yards he did when the game was 90% running the ball... I am not sure he isn't #1 really. He played in the bad old days of football when clotheslines and head slaps were not only legal, but encouraged. When you didn't just get away with mugging the receiver... you got away with knifing him in the ribs and stealing his car.
I've just never seen him play, and I have no way to compare his game to today's... so I couldn't include him. But I am absolutely sure he deserves to be in that top 10 somewhere.
It's obviously not a perfect list by a long shot.
