The problem is Avril is complaining but also demanding Charles Johnson money. I get he wants a long term deal but complaining while making 13 million dollars in 2 years(2 for the tender and 10.6 for the tag) plus his first 3 years, you shouldn't really complain about that relative to regular people. You won't get tagged Avril if you accept a deal less than Charles Johnson money. He may end up getting it though eventually just won't be the Lions if the Lions stick to their guns.

Last 2 Lions franchised players, deals got done before the July deadline. But I think the Lions caved with Redding. Ridiculous contract.

Avrils backing off his hold out comments now....the guy is just looking after himself...you can't blame him , he plays a year on a tag and rips his knee apart and never plays another down again are the Lions going to take care of him and his the rest of his life...NO , it's buisness they'll move on and forget about him.

tag him and workout something long term before the draft or deal him for a pick and a team willing to give him his deal.

He just quoted yesterday how its definitely an option on the table. I get he wants a long term deal....but its going about it the wrong way. You expect guys like chris johnson and other superstars who put together monster years to make whats going on with their contract so public.....i dont expect it from cliff frikken avril who thinks hes all world now cause he had 11 sacks playing next to suh and starting every play 3 yards outside the tackle. Hes bitter cause of the way MM handled it....i doubt anything gets done unless MM caves.

bitter ?? he wants along term deal instead of the tag like 90% of the guys in the League , Lions told him last year play on the tender and prove yourself and we'll talk long term after the season...Avril held up his end.

whether he gets tagged , traded , long term deal I could careless but Im not pissed at a guy looking out for himself.

completely agree slick....like i stated previously....this entire thing is 100% MMs fault. He handled it wrong last year and thats why Avri lis bitter cause now MM wont fork over the cash. Like i said....unless MM caves, Avril is gone.

Anybody with half a brain would pick Mario over Avril, so the question is pointless. Therefore, it makes no sense.

And now your 'hate' for Avril has become crystal fn clear, bro. Why make up a scenario when you know, just like the rest of us, that it would NEVER happen? I don't understand it.....

And where does it say that Avril is looking for TOP money? I know he wants to get paid, but he just wants a long-term contract. Didn't he say he would love to 'meet in the middle'? Or was that all bullshit?

its not about hate....its partly about skill and mostly about him. Ill go as far to say if we drafted Mercilus at 23 and started him all 16 games he would outproduce Avril and be much better in the run game. Now that would cost us about a million.

Now....the other part of this is the fact HE DOESNT EVEN WANT TO BE HERE. His public comments are aired basically every day on ESPN....and nothing he is saying is showing any loyalty to the team. Its all about him right now. Even if we give him close to $11 million he PUBLICLY stated he would sit out training camps.

I hate to bring this up again cause ppl are ignorant and will start blasting me....but this whole scenario is just another case of MM fucking up. Believe me, dont believe me....but its the truth. You should have extended Avril last year when HE WANTED TO sign the dot and would have cost us much much less. MM played the game and lost. Avril is bitter about that and that is what this entire thing is about. MM wanted to play the game....avril did and played well. So now hes taking revenge and he will follow the money. The money he wants doesnt match the level of his talent imo. As stated earlier....i think a rookie could come in and line up next to Suh and put up 11 sacks and it will cost us $10 million less.

MM may very well tag Avril.....but that would compound the mistake that he made in the first place by not extending him sooner. Thats not the way to manage a team with as many needs as we do.

He doesn't want to be here? Revenge? ...lol. C'mon, man! he just wants a contract. Do you blame him? He's outplayed his rookie deal. He was a 3rd round pick who hasn't really played like a 3rd round pick. He's played better.

And yeah, MM gambled, but i wouldn't really say 'he lost'. The organization wanted to see if Avril could improve and HE HAS. Now, it's negotiating time, right? It's always a nightmare when it comes to this bullshit. You have 10 different stories from the player, his agent, his Mother and Father. It's a gongshow...lol. Tag the fucking kid and deal with it.

And to say that a rookie can come in and get 11 sacks because Suh is there is wishful thinking, bro. I don't completely agree on that.

That would be stupid on the Lions if they let him just walk and be 'gone'. Not gonna happen..............

I disagree. Mayhew is handling it perfectly. Avril has exposed his hand, basically saying he doesn't like the tag because there's no security. So Mayhew will tag him and simply wait for Avril to cave and take Mayhew's long term offer of $8-9 million because he's so desperate for that security. Avril should've never opened his mouth.

should have never opened his mouth ?? pretty much NOBODY likes the tag , like I stated before he was told last year to play on the tender and prove himself and he'd get his long term deal...Avril did his part , now MM is doing what he has to do because capwise his balls are in a vice.

Lions are going to tag him it's a no brainer , whether they workout a long term deal at a cap friendly number but a fair number for Cliff is the big question.

The key in negotiations is who caves first. Neither side wants Avril to play on the tag. Mayhew wants a cap-friendly deal, Avril wants long-term security.

My point simply is that Avril seems more desperate to avoid the tag than Mayhew, so he seems more likely to cave. Once Cliff accepts that he's not hitting the open market, and he's faced with either playing on that tag for 10.6 mil or accepting a long-term deal for around 8-9 mil annually, which do you think he'll choose? On the other hand, do you think Mayhew's gonna give Avril the annual $ he wants just to get a more cap-friendly first year?

Everyone knows players don't want the tag. But a player needs to at least act like he's willing to risk playing on a short-term deal. The only REAL leverage Avril has is making Mayhew believe he'll play on that cap-crushing tag since he knows Mayhew doesn't want that. He needs to hold onto that.

He played on a tender last year...lol

I'd be pissed to.

I know, but his tender last year was cheap. Mayhew WANTED him to play on that. This year, he'd rather get a cap-friendly deal.

Avril can be pissed. I would be to. But he gains nothing by pouting about the tag.

Avril will get long term security as soon as he realizes he doesn't deserve Charles Johnson/Hali type money. Mayhew knew he had no chance unless he tagged him because once a bidding war starts Avril is gone. Until then we got a nice little stand off. So we'll either get something for him(a pick, 2nd rounder maybe) from a team willing to secure him without a bidding war and pay him Hali money or Avril/Lions will meet in the middle of he truly wants to remain a Lion on a nice sized long term deal. Or we just get another year from Avril and see develop Young and Lojack more and have 2 drafts to replace Avril. Extra draft while maintaing production may be worth the one year franchise ONLY if they get Calvin on a long term deal with a better cap number so we don't lose Tulloch.

Avril doesn't deserve Johnson/Hali money but would get it if he hit the open market....don't you think Avril knows what he'll get if he hits the open market ?

good reason for him to be pissed then , right ? getting tagged and playing on a 1 year guarantee possibly leaves millions and millions of dollars on the table for him.

he may not be on par with those guys abilty wise but lesser players have made millions just by hitting the market at the right time.
