Wow, Beilein Gone.

tsmith comes out of retirement/hiding to post this?

I have a feeling this is going to be a weird week... not in a good way.

I think that I got the initial thread online, but it was merged with tsmiths.

I don't think anyone is actively panicking. This is just shocking and people are going to have shocked reactions.

I doubt members of this board are in their offices setting things on fire and running into the street.

And I am looking ahead to the possibilities.

And I am looking ahead to the possibilities.

According to Nick Baumgardner, after flirting with the Pistons last year, Warde Manuel was expecting JB to leave for his next NBA offer. He's had a short list ready since.

The way the season ended, with a *kerplunk* and the previously exuberant Jordan Poole sullenly slinking out of town, and Beilein's previous flirting with the NBA makes me kinda think the basketball team was not One Big Happy Family, and this next season was going to have issues anyway.

Who knows where the blame for this lies - Warde Manuel, or JB - OR if it's even one person, or many-sided, but I think Beilein's flirting with the Pistons was more of a red flag that all was not well than we wanted to admit at the time.

I'd like to say "Next Man Up!" but I don't know if JB got us to the sort of plateau where we can at least expect not to revert back to what we were in the Ellerbe-Amaker years.

I can't really see us becoming a perennial sub-0.500 team in conference, but... I don't have any faith in Warde Manuel's hiring abilities yet. How many head coaches has he hired in Ann Arbor - if any - let alone Big Time hires, like the men's basketball coach?

Thiis team started 17-0 and then flattened out. I'd guess that this was a catalyst for "not one big happy family" possibility.

I’m honestly shocked and kind of bummed. Guy was a class act and unlike football I enjoyed seeing Michigan basketball relevant and a great rivalry between us with tons of meaningful games. The good news is the basketball program has what I believe to be a solid foundation, as opposed to 15 years ago.

It's become relatively well known that Poole was NBA dreaming after that start and his great play in December. His dad was trashing JB and Poole was making plenty of mental mistakes. X called him out for it and told him no more of the "my bad" shit.

It wasn't one big happy family and Poole and his father's relationship with JB seem to be the root cause. I mentioned before, but UMHoops stated they have never seen JB so frustrated with a player.

had no idea about all that, but it explains a lot.

Poole's dad was probably seeing dollar signs...

thing is, what could he possibly be bitching about? JB was giving his kid plenty of minutes. even in his bad statistical games, he still played, even if he seemed to disappear (like against MSU)

He thought Poole should handle the ball and have the offense run through him. Complained about X being ball dominant.

We had to have X be ball dominant because we didn't have anyone else who was even halfway decent at distributing the ball.

Wow, I'm pretty surprised by that and a bit saddened even if it ends up being a good thing in the short term for MSU.

You can hardly blame college coaches nowadays for taking their shot at the NBA though. Not having to deal with recruiting and then still dealing with a bunch of stupid junk once you've gotten the players too with everyone with their eye on the NBA. I'm surprised Izzo didn't do it the last time he was mentioned for NBA openings.

CBS headline: Cavaliers agree to hire Michigan's Beilein

I find CBS' headline to be rather stupid, like Beilein inquired and put in an application to be the head coach of their shitty 19 win team.

Izzo's tempermant is different. He can, I think, be more resilient to the crap that's flung about.

Really don?t see him as nba coach but it would close out his career

Apparently warde Manuel felt he would take next nova offer after he interviewed with pistons last year

At his age kind of surprising do maybe something he wasn?t happy with

From Stock Risers recruiting Twitter: Even more shocking, recruits have been under the impression he wasn’t going to leave. Already spoke to several recruits who are extremely shocked. In more significant news: The players from Michigan found out the news when everyone else did, not a good situation. Everyone just beyond shocked by this move.

I am suprised at his age but not shocked as he almost took the Pistons job. Makes sense that he is getting frustrated with college athletes a bit. Poole ended up being the cancer in the locker room. You could tell after the 17-0 start this team was not on the same page down the strech. Poole needs to shoulder some of that blame in my opinion.
At 66 not sure why he would leave to the Nba other then he is fed up with how the ncaa works, and maybe he wants to see if he can win in the Nba. Cleveland will not be over .500 for a few years so it is puzzling. I guess he can put his stamp on the team. Maybe it?s a money grab. Heck why not then.

Hopefully we make a good hire and do not lose any top assistants. I like Haynes , and Yaklich a lot. Just find a great recruiter and hopefully they won?t drop off so far. At 66 it had to happen sooner or later just wish he had gone about it differently. I sure hope the 2 recruits we have will still come to Michigan.

plus Xavier can't shoot so putting the ball in Poole's hands would mean playing w/ 4 guys on offense with a lesser quality PG. It's frustrating to see a kid's parent interfere and mess them up - and the teams they're associated with. We had a similar situation with Marcus Taylor where his dad interfered and ended up ruining his career.

This is a real drag - I'm not predicting dire consequences for uofm hoops but he was a class act and a great coach. He will be tough to replace. I liked him a lot and thought he was not only good for uofm, but the B1G and college hoops in general.

Has he had NBA looks before the Pistons? I'm not aware of any and looking at his career, he seems like he's been a grinder, sort of proving himself outside the spotlight. Maybe it's taken longer because he's taken a different path to where he is. He never had an assistant role at a big program, he's basically made a name for himself over time spending 15 years at small colleges before getting the Richmond job and that's really not a big program either - took him 5 years there for WVU to take a chance on him. And unlike guys like Calipari and Petino, he didn't cheat to speed up the process.
