can't get a deal done with him either....

Eric Wright - DB - Lions

The Lions have been in "regular contact" with free agent CB Eric Wright since season's end.
The fact that they haven't gotten a deal done, however, suggests Wright is asking for more money than the Lions can afford. It sounds like the team will let Wright's value be established by the open market. NBC Sports' Gregg Rosenthal reported at the Combine that the Rams are expected to pursue Wright on March 13.

CB may be an option at 23 although losing Wright doesnt make it a necessity.

Jeff Backus - T - Lions The Detroit Free Press expects free agent LT Jeff Backus back with the Lions on a short-term deal.
Backus is 34 and recovering from a torn biceps, but could draw two- to three-year offers in a thin market for tackles. With no in-house replacement at the ready, the Lions are unlikely to let a player who's made a franchise-record 176 consecutive starts get away. Source: Detroit Free Press Mar 11 - 10:11

Stephen Tulloch - LB - Lions According to the Detroit Free Press, MLB Stephen Tulloch appears "most destined" of the Lions' in-house free agents to reach the open market.
The Lions have been trying to sign Tulloch to a long-term deal, but have made little headway. If Tulloch is allowed to walk, the Free Press expects the Lions to search for his replacement on the open market. Among the players expected to join Tulloch in a rich market for inside linebackers are Curtis Lofton, Dan Connor, David Hawthorne, London Fletcher and Joe Mays. Source: Detroit Free Press

this cap situation is gonna bite us in the ass hard unless we restructure like 4 deals

I'm now of mindset to trade CJ, Suh, and Staff if they don't restructure. We'd get like 6 R1 picks and probably a few R2 and R3 on top of that. ALL of those picks sign for less money than any one of those 3 contracts. Bring to bear the remaining money to fill all the holes and depth. I'm sure I'm going to be condemned a traitor for saying that, but that's only way I see the Lions getting to the SB now. It is a new NFL, and the teams that make the most of the rookie cap are the teams that will win it all. Rams are looking great right now not just because of who they will get with all their picks, but whom they can afford in FA because of the cap room those picks will save.

ofcourse you are in favor of trading them...because you have no clue how the NFL works....the cap hits on trading them would be crippling.

keep spouting your nonsense you are quite comical.

and also you're trading away the 3 best players on the team...after years of waiting to get to the playoffs and we go 10 -6 we trade the 3 franchise guys and rebuild.....KUDOS to you ya moron

There's the old crazy Slick I miss so much.

Can't just explain yourself, gotta go and be an asshole like your old ESPN self. I wondered how long it would take to see it.

Besides, even with the cap hits, I am guessing they would save money. This is a whole new NFL Slick, the rookie cap is a huge game changer. Yoy can now trade guys, pick up draft picks, take the cap hit, sign the rookies, and still have money left over for signing solid FAs who complete the team while the guys under the rookie cap are the stars.

Staff and Suh would be under their rookie cap deals, right (if they had a rookie cap then). They would still be the stars on the LionsN but cap wise the Lions could afford talent across the board.

I never said I don't like those guys. I never said I don't appreciate what they have done. All I'm stating is in the new age of the rookie cap there are alternatives. If 3 guys eat up over 25 percent of your cap, you will be left with many holes to fill, too many to win the SB with. That is exactly where the Lions find themselves at this time.

You don't have to like it, hell I don't, but that is the reality check the new rookie cap has placed upon teams. I'm looking at it more from a management perspective. As a fan, I hate the idea, but as a business move it makes sense.

The cap hit on CJ would be for what, one year? Two at most. Afterwards you are saving 15+ million for just his contract. Again, not saying they will do it, nor am I a fan of losing CJ, but I can at least comprehend the move from a management perspective.

it doesn't make sense....

#1 - you don't trade a franchise QB

#2 - the cap hit in 2012 would be massive and cripple them

Can we all get off the ledge and trust our excellent GM?

Has anyone else noticed that almost every team has had trouble re-signing their FAs? The FAs are all seeing lots of $$$. They can't all get paid. Good GMs will let the market come down for many of these guys. Mayhew isn't gonna overpay for an average (if that) corner like Wright just to get him signed before the market opens.

I could careless about Eric Wright....Im happy with Houston a 1st rd pick and Alphonso Smith in the nickel as the top 3 CB next year.

I thought Smith was gonna be out of Detroit because the coaches hate him? I always liked Smith, guy is a ballhawk without a doubt. I just thought the general concensus was that he would not be back.

I agree, trade Suh Staff and CJ. I miss the decade worth of crap. Nothing wrong with 1 playoffs a decade, good for the soul.

Be as sarcastic as you want, in 5 years the talk will be about ditching high money guys in favor of getting picks and spreading the money across all positions in order to put together a winning TEAM instead of having the old school thought of having a couple superstars. Don't blame me for recognizing the shift. Salary caps will hamstring the Lions until they figure that out. The ONLY possible exception to that is of couse QB, but again, even Stafford would be on his rookie cap this upcoming year. Sure would be nice to have an extra 10+ mil this year along with his 5000 yards, wouldn't it?

if anything u trade 1 of the 3.. all 3 is just stupidity. those 3 are the foundation of the team.. did u forget all 3 of these players make everyone around them better???

Whatever it takes to win the SB is what they need to do. If that means 1 or all 3 or any other player is no longer a Lion then so be it. The SB is the only thing that matters and when that happens, whomever is on the field is the best the Lions ever had, regardless of on field stats or other analysis. Can the Lions win the SB with these 3? Sure! And we'd all love to see it. But you have to admit these salaries are killing them to where they might not be able to match last year's record and miss the playoffs because the team overall is worse. What good is there in having them if it means the rest of the team sucks?

you dont trade any of those 3 ever....Stafford without CJ throws for 2800 yds and 26 INTs. Suh gone makes avril the POS he was his first 3 seasons....only this time hed be a $10.6 mil POS.

What the fk you talking about? No one in the history of the NFL does this. Not one. What's the point of this asinine idea. Ain't going to happen, will never happen and you're a goof thinking it would or should. And the cap came after these 3 got drafted, its over get over it and enjoy winning for once.

just for shits and giggles...CJ would save $18+ million if traded
