Your Lions Offseason

http://www.detroitlions.com/news/li...it-Lions/836a50ca-fc9f-4136-b8dc-77bc2c8de43c

Vanden Bosch had 3.5 sacks last season ? his lowest total since 2009 ? and his salary cap number for 2013 was scheduled to be over $10 million. He was also set to make a $2 million roster bonus.

The Lions saved $5 million towards the 2013 salary cap by releasing him.

Vanden Bosch has been nothing but a consummate professional since joining the Lions, taking some of the younger defensive ends under his wing.

Cliff Avril has credited Vanden Bosch a number of times over the last couple years for helping him become the player he is now, which is one of the top free agents pass rushers on the market this offseason.

"I would dedicate the majority of my success and how I?ve turned my career around to him," Avril said after the season. "I have so much respect for him and how he approaches the game. He?s basically taught me how to become a pro."

The Lions entered the week approximately $3 million over the projected $121 million salary cap. Vanden Bosch?s release is a reality of life in the NFL under the salary-cap rules.

KVB didn't produce last year. Even if his cap number was low they should have cut the guy or at least bench him and severely limit his snaps. He served his purpose as a mentor and did produce some in 2010/2011. We'll see if Suh and Fairleys and Youngs and Lo Jacks hustle continue without KVB.

Can we cut Burleson's massive contract too? Oh wait we can't. lol

whats your problem with the Old Man ? state of the art building , the payroll is at the max.....ownership can only do so much , pay the bills and give them anything they ask for....which he does.

could be worse....you could be a Jags fan

Jaguars - 125/1 to win the SB.

Draft:

1 Dee Milliner CB
2 Margus Hunt DE
3 Khaseem Greene OLB
4 DJ Swearinger S (should get a 4th for Eric Wright)
5 Brad Wing P
6 Theo Riddick Rb/Wr
7 Marquise Goodwin Wr/KR

Free Agency:
Paul Kruger DE
Mike Wallace WR
La'rod Stephens-Howling RB

Resign:
Houston
Durant
Delmas
SLH

Restructure Staff. Negotiate lower salaries for burleson and KVB. Let CW and Levy walk. Still have a hole at safety.

fml....I knew Goodwin was a track guy but I didn't know he was THAT fast. going to have to change my mock...hes not dropping that far :/

Nice call on Goodwin

bad call on theo Riddick though. he always looked so quick to me in the ND games I saw. and the fact he played WR and rb thought hed be a good fit. Ran a slow slow 40 times though...meh.

Franklin looked the best today for me out of the "speed back" group. better than barner and Bernard imo.

Polian is drunk. His top 5 needs are RB TE WR OT OG for us lol.

Detroit Lions

Key need: RB
Others: TE/WR/OT/OG/S

Detroit is a dominant running back away from having a dynamic offense. Whether the Lions get that player in free agency or the draft remains to be seen, but they need one. Just imagine how much more effective WR Calvin Johnson could be if the defense had to divide its attention more? Help on the offensive line is also a must.

WOOOOOOooooooo

Margus Hunt - DL - Player SMU DE Margus Hunt led all defensive linemen in bench-press reps at the Combine with 38 reps of 225 pounds.
Hunt goes 6-foot-8, 277 with pretty long arms at 33 3/8 inches, so the feat is impressive. Hunt, an Estonia native who turns 26 in July, has a journeyman-type background for an NFL draft prospect. He's a projected day-two selection.

The Philadelphia Eagles released defensive tackles Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson on Monday, the team announced.

Graziano on Jenkins' release

GrazianoCullen Jenkins likely won't be the last member of the Eagles' 2011 "dream team" free-agent class to be released this offseason, Dan Graziano writes. Blog

Jenkins was part of the Eagles' free-agent spending spree in 2011 when he left the Green Bay Packers to join Philadelphia on a five-year, $25 million deal. The Eagles were labeled a "dream team" by then-backup quarterback Vince Young after the additions but stumbled to a disappointing 8-8 record that season.

Jenkins agreed to restructure his contract last offseason in order to stay with the Eagles. He was due to make $5.5 million this season.

The 29-year-old Patterson, who had brain surgery last year, is said to feel better than he has in three years and wants to continue playing, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The former 2005 first-round pick suffered a seizure at practice on Aug. 3, 2011, and was diagnosed with a brain AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, a prenatal condition in which blood travels abnormally between the arteries and veins.

He was the Eagles' longest tenured player.

"I want to thank the fans for all of their support over eight years in Philadelphia. It is never easy to say goodbye to a fan base that supported me no matter what. My goal was to come to work every day to try and make the Philadelphia Eagles the best organization we could be," Patterson said in a statement.

Nnamdi Asomugha, another member of the "dream team" free-agent class, has been asked to restructure his contract or he also will be released, league sources have told ESPN. The two sides met Friday in Indianapolis at the scouting combine.

Asomugha, 31, is scheduled to make $15 million, $4 million of which is guaranteed. A three-time Pro Bowler with the Raiders from 2003-10, Asomugha has been a major disappointment with the Eagles since signing a five-year, $60 million contract in 2011.

The 32-year-old Jenkins started all 32 games after signing with the Eagles and had 9.5 sacks in his two seasons for Philadelphia, including four last season. Jenkins, who spent his first seven NFL seasons in Green Bay, has 38.5 sacks in 125 career games.

"I had a chance to speak with Cullen today and let him know of our decision," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. "It's one of the most difficult parts of the job. He has been a very productive player in this league for a long time but we felt it in our team's best interests that we go in a different direction. By releasing him at this point, it gives he and his agent more time to sign on with another team. We wish Cullen and his family all the best as he continues his NFL career."

Roseman, meanwhile, credited Patterson for his toughness in the statement announcing his release.

"Mike Patterson is one of the toughest players I have ever been around in the National Football League," Roseman said. "He has overcome many obstacles throughout his career and I have the upmost respect for him because of it. Coach Kelly and I each had great conversations with him today. He is a class act. He gave this organization eight great seasons of hard work and dedication and we wish him all the best as he continues his career in this league."

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Without reading your wall of text, explain why it's good news?

cause they just released their starting DTs. They have the pick right before us. There are 2 or 3 top 10 DTs in the draft. More chance that a joeckel, fisher, milliner drop to us.

Whether or not the Detroit Lions are able to lure impending free agent DE Cliff Avril back into the mix with a multi-year contract, it's expected that they'll be looking to make some additions to their defensive line rotation in other ways as well. Fortunately, this year's draft class features a number of defensive linemen that might be a good fit for Jim Schwartz's team at No. 5 overall.

There are two, in particular, that may be the selection when it's their turn this April: BYU's Ziggy Ansah and Florida St.'s Bjoern Werner.

"I just think he has tremendous upside," Lions GM Martin Mayhew said of Ansah, per the Detroit News. "What this guy will be able to do in three or four years; you get a guy like that and the sky's the limit. He's exciting."

Mayhew's remarks are the flip side to something that has been raised as a concern about Ansah: he only began playing football during his junior year at BYU. As for Werner, Mayhew quipped, "[He's] a very talented guy who we think a lot of."

Ansah is a more raw physical athlete, while Werner is more of a polished competitor that can likely step in and be a three-down DE as a rookie. For the Lions (and the other clubs in the Top 10 considering a DE), it may come down to the debate over upside vs. current productivity.

Give me the next JPP with raw talent that is more easily molded into a superstud than a guy with less growth potential. Lions are in rebuilding mode and need to develop their talent over a couple years at this point. They are not going to find a singular cure to all their ills and that means a few years until all thrusters are firing in sync. Better to get the guy with that raw talent so he can supercharge the team when it counts.

Of course mayhew needs immediate production for job security, so they won't take him. And the lions are once more doomed to the land of woulda-coulda-shoulda.

Sometimes the guy with the potential ends up as the woulda-coulda-shoulda guy.

whens the last time this staff coached anyone up? lol. its been failed attempt over failed attempt. spievey and levy come to mind with guys they think are THEIR guy and that fit their system....then they suck. Srsly name one guy on this team that has excelled and wasn't expected to....you cant do it.

That's more scouting whether its the actually scouts or Schwartz/Mayhew and not because they weren't coached up. Some guys are just average players.

Subject to change of course....but here is my wish list right now.

Round 1 - Milliner.....GOTTA have Houston back to make this pick more effective, but he flew today.

Round 2 - Tavon Austin....pipe dream considering he is projected to go in the 1st now. Fills the playmaker need in our offense.

Round 3 - Michael Buchanan DE, ILL....watched him run. Is a great size, weight, speed guy and is better than what he showed last year. Was once thought of as a late 1st, top 2nd round pick. Looked really athletic at the combine and is solid against the run.

Round 4 - Shamarko Thomas SS, Syracuse. Small but big playmaker. FAST. 4.3 speed. Compares to Bob Sanders and has some instincts and ball skills. A good pick this late.

Rounds 5-7......???? Shoelace maybe. Gholston, even though he is clearly better suited to a 3-4. Gholston could EASILY do what KVB did last year....which wasnt much.

I don't want a WR anywhere near the top 3 rounds. Some combination of DE, LT, S, CB -- any three of those would work.
