Your Lions Offseason

Reading comprehension meet Mitch, Mitch this is reading comprehension. . .

When you throw out AP and say Bell is 2nd best, which s basically what you're saying "put his #'s up against anybody but AP and he's looking all pro worthy" - so yeah you think he's that good.

its like you can't even read. if you would like I will help you understand what I wrote. do you need help? I know mama told you stupid is as stupid does but its really no excuse for your negligence.

I just quoted ya. If you have some dumb ass 2nd meaning in that well what can I say, write what you mean.

Eric Fisher - T - Player The Detroit Free Press considers Central Michigan LT Eric Fisher a realistic candidate for the Lions' pick at No. 5 overall.
Dee Milliner is the most popular Lions mock pick right now, but the Alabama cornerback might not get past corner-needy Philadelphia at No. 4. And there isn't another cornerback worth a top-five pick in this draft. Fisher would be an excellent fallback option, upgrading Matthew Stafford's blindside protection. Related: Lions

Matthew Stafford - QB - Lions NFL Network's Albert Breer confirms the Lions have held preliminary extension talks with Matthew Stafford.
"Nothing pressing at this point," added Breer. This is old news, though, as the local writers have been on top of the matter since earlier in the month. Stafford's 2013 cap hit sits at $20.8 million, but president Tom Lewand says the possible extension won't be for salary cap purposes, rather that Detroit still holds the former No. 1 pick in high regard.

I've been keen on taking fisher for about a week or so.. We'll see.

hmmm....milliner in the 1st and moore in the 2nd?

Damontre Moore - DL - Player ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Texas A&M DE Damontre Moore's poor Combine "validated whispers" among NFL scouts who were all along unimpressed by his athleticism.
Moore's stock is in a bit of a free fall after he managed a slow 4.95 forty-yard dash at 250 pounds, and hoisted just 12 reps on the bench. Moore ranked 22nd-of-37 defensive linemen in the forty, outrunning only DLs who weigh at least 30 pounds more than him. Once viewed as a possible top-five selection, Moore is really more of a late first-round and possible second-round pick.

Nate Burleson - WR - Lions Nate Burleson's restructured contract drops his 2013 base salary from $4.5 million to $2 million.
His new cap number is $4.031 million. Burleson would have surely had to take a bigger cut were it not for the sorry state of the Lions' receiver corps. As it is, Ryan Broyles' injury and the firing of Titus Young ensure he'll be a big part of the offense in 2013.

I don't have a problem with Nate. He stated he wants to finish his career here and restructuring two years in a row works for me. I think his 5.5 stays on for next year though.

I know this would be a HUGE gamble of a draft, but I'd actually like to see us take Fischer (OT - CMU), Hunt (DE - SMU), Warford (G - UK), Matthieu (CB - LSU), Wing (P - LSU) with the first five picks.

Reminds me of what Pudge did for the Tigers. Pudge was more productive on the field, but NB has that same "hey, come to Detroit....it ain't that bad" line he gives FA. Hopefully it works.

I'd be pretty happy with this draft if we're able to resign Chris Houston. Not sure if Warford will last til our 3rd round pick though (he's projected rounds 2-3). It sets us up well for the future at the two tackle spots with Fisher and Reiff. Hunt gives us a good DE with better potential. Warford would provide competition for Nagy and then if Nagy takes over for Dom in 2014, Warford could take RG. Matthieu is a bit of a risk, but could be well worth it. And it would be very nice to finally have a good punter.

Exactly my thinking. Fischer and Hunt are physical beasts who could be boom or bust type guys, but you can't teach size, strength, and speed and these guys have it and are at positions of need. Hunt had a crazy combine in all aspects. Warford is just a big nasty guard and another position of need for us. Matthieu would be a gamble based on the drug stuff, but you gotta gamble on middle round talent when you suck as bad as we do. I think Wing could be a huge addition for this team too. Our punting has really sucked and we always seem to lose the field position battles due to our pathetic special teams play.

its close to my mock but i still have to fill the immediate need with milliner over taking a 3rd starting tackle assuming backus comes back. Reiff and backus are fine for now. But if backus is gone id quickly be on board with Fisher. CB would be a major issue if we neglect it this off season.

I was going back and forth on Milliner and Fischer for the first round too. I'd be okay with either of them there. I think we're more committed to offense and protecting Stafford, so I think an OT is probably more likely, although Mayhew seems to like speedy DBs. Who knows?

If they do take Fisher, time to thank Backus for a long career...and cut bait with him. Use that $7M elsewhere (minus the March roster bonus...which is pennies vs. the 2013 base).

Backus doesn't get the credit he deserves for a pretty damn good career. Certainly not a HOFer or anywhere close to it, but he went through a lot of bad seasons without complaint or trade demands. He endured numerous coaching changes, QB's, OL.....and he was there through it all.

Solid.

Had the Lions got that kind of loyalty and production from all their draft picks they would be in a MUCH better position right now.

True...that's why I thank him for his effort. But, cut Backus and use that $7M as part of a long-term Levitre deal. Snag one of the LTs at #5 and all you have is Dom on a one-year deal with Nagy in the wings. And, maybe even get a C later in the draft to develop. O-line, done...for the first time in decades.
