2012 Cy Young race

Wins and losses are based on team stats....but the pitchers have a lot to do with it too. To say that JV doesn't deserve some of those losses is stupid. You have to look at everything...not just things that support your argument. I think JV is the best pitcher in baseball but to say that Weaver shouldn't be in the discussion....come on....stop being such a homer. Another thing...it's the Cy Young award....it's not the best Dips, K/9 WAR award. Sometimes a player gets the advantage of having a good defense around him...or maybe an offensive player gets the advantage of playing in a hitters park....or having another great hitter protecting him in the order. Are you going to bring up the advantage that Miggy has because Prince is hitting behind him when he is in the MVP discussion?

Having a great hitter behind him isn't all that big of an advantage.

Protection doesn't have much of an impact, it's largely a myth.

Are you telling me that Miggy would have as many HRs and RBIs if Delmon was hitting behind him vs. Prince?

His production would pretty much be the same, yeah.

I think you are dead wrong. Pitchers would pitch around Miggy more if Delmon was hitting behind him. He would most likely have fewer HRs, RBIs but have more walks.

Another myth.

People also think the person hitting in front of Cabrera will see more fastballs/better pitches because of Cabrera.

Without Prince Cabrera probably gets a few more IBB's, but that's situational, many of Cabrera's HR's have come in a spot where he wouldn't get IBB'd anyways.

Protection for a hitter is useful, but way overrated.

Overrated and a myth??? lol. That's why "baseball experts" talk about it like it's gospel.

Gotta go with tomdalton on this one. Wow, i can't believe i just typed that..lol.

"baseball experts" don't talk about it at all. Old baseball writers from the stone age who have not bothered to keep up with expanding baseball knowledge might say that, but they are hardly "experts".

and the people that post on this board are one step below the baseball writers....in some cases several steps below!

Horse shit and you know it.

Miguel is seeing more fastballs this season than in previous seasons by a small margin.

He did have V-Mart hitting behind him last year. You put DY behing him and watch the number of fast balls drop even more and the "un-intentional" intentional walks rise.

I can admit that experts and baseball writers know much more about the game than I do. Unfortunately, some people on this board think they are experts because they spit out stats.

Baseball writers went to school for journalism.

That's why they're baseball writers, it's not because they're experts, or have some great knowledge of the game.

They're more qualified to write about the game, that in no way means they know more about it, or can analyze it better than any fan who didn't go to school for journalism.

If a baseball writer is around the game 24/7 for years has no more insight than a typical fan that isn't involved with baseball? If you around the game for years you are going to know more than the typical fan.

They'll know more than the average or casual fan, sure.

And yet Cabrera has a lower walk rate and IBB rate his year with Prince behind him than he did with Victor.

The fact is IBB's have less to do with who's behind him, as they do in situations where they just don't want to pitch tho Cabrera.

Protection is a factor, it's just really overrated. And Cabrera as protection, [like for the #2 hitter] is just a myth.

It's a concept that I really don't get. You pitch to the #2 guy the way in which you best know to get him out.
