2014 MLB Draft

Not thrilled. Has no power, but could have a good OBP which goes well with his speed. We're at least 4 years away from talking about this kid reaching the Majors, which is another thing I don't like. We need outfield help starting next season. Oh well. Could be a good player, just not for a while.

Power can develop as he matures and puts on a little muscle, but I'm less concerned with power for a CF than I would be for a corner OF. Honestly I like the pick, a great defensive player with speed that will help him cover the sub-continent which is the CoPa CF.

People didn't draft Porcello because they didn't think they could sign him, DD disobeyed Selig on Porcello when other GM's weren't willing to. To not give credit for being smarter than the other guy sounds ludicrous.

As for Avila, which one is it? They only drafted him because he is the Assistant GM's son or they had the inside track on him because he is the Assistant GM's son? Do we take that stat and say "Hmm, nepotism has nothing to do with it."

Also, by that logic the Dodgers deserve no credit for drafting Mike Piazza.

Being smarter?

Every GM would have drafted Porcello if they had an owner that they knew was willing to sign him. He was the number two prospect in that draft behind Price. Illitch gets 100% of the credit for Porcello.

DD knew Illitch would pay what it cost to sign Porcello. It was a no brainer, so he gets no credit.

As for Avila, they had more knowledge and inside info on Avila than any other organization because his dad is the assistant GM. They get no credit for that.

Spencer Turnbull

That pick is pure Tigers...

Tigers are trend-setting here. With the rash of TJ surgeries, why not stock up on spare human parts? Brilliant strategy, even if the legalities aren't quite worked out.

MLB: "Turnbull cut his ERA from 5.60 as an Alabama freshman to 3.70 as a sophomore, and he took a similar huge step forward this spring. Cleaning up his delivery has given him better velocity and control, and he could push himself into the second round of the Draft. After topping out at 94 mph with his fastball in the past, Turnbull now reaches 98 and regularly works at 92-94. He also has improved the life on his heater, and he uses his size and high-three-quarters delivery to throw it on a steep downward plane. He also has made strides with his slider, which shows flashes of becoming a plus pitch. Turnbull has a strong build and the makings of an average changeup, allowing him to project as a mid-rotation starter. His command isn't nearly as strong as his control, however, so it's possible he could wind up as a late-inning reliever."

ESPN: "Turnbull has two above-average pitches and the size to be a durable mid-rotation starter, but the lack of a quality third pitch have many believing he?s a reliever at the big league level. He sits 90-93 with his fastball with good sink when he gets downhill, and will touch 95. He throws a 12-to-6 curveball from a high three-quarters arm slot with inconsistent spin and depth, but it will flash above-average and he can generally locate the pitch for strikes.

While Turnbull has shown a change in the past, it?s really just a show-me pitch at this point, with very little movement and only average deception. His breaking ball and command have both progressed, so he has a chance to be a solid back-end starter if he misses more bats and the change shows more promise."
