2022 Off-Season

Also I recant my Kayvon Thibodeaux hate. I watched one game where he was rather unimpressive. But then I watched vs ucla and he wrecked the game. Dunno how good the right tackle on UCLA was though.

The recent criticism I've heard is he has a small frame. He's 6'5'' 260 lbs.... that's like the worst attempt at at criticizing someone ever lol.

The season is pretty much over for us at this point and I think we are essentially locked into the 2nd pick. I think with all the injuries we had we out-performed more often then not and also gave us the opportunity for un-earth some gems. Anyway here goes my revised 2022 off-season plan

Re-sign

JRM 3 years 14mil, year 1 cap hit 3mil - This guy has impressed me as much as any player on the roster this year based on expectations coming into this year. He has gone from an after thought on defense to a solid starter for us. These are the types of guys you build your roster with and he can return as a potential starter, and your best special teams player.

Anzalone 1 year, 1.5mil Great veteran presence, but should be depth next year.

Walker 2 years, 12mil, year 1 cap hit 4mil Walker had an awesome start to the year, but he has really faded down the stretch. Maybe part of that is injuries or dealing with a lot of youth in the secondary, but he has lost some money for sure. A two year deal allows him to hit free agency again before 30 at a chance for a bigger payday.

Raymond 1 year 1.5mil I like the depth he provides, but he should be no higher than the 5th WR and I wouldn't pay a lot to bring him back.

Charles Harris 3 years 24mil, year 1 cap hit 5mil This guy has mae himself some money for sure. I believe the contract in reasonabl as teams won't be lining up to overpay a guy with only one year of solid production. He has already said he wants to come back so I believe they come to terms on a reasonable deal and show they are willing to keep their own.

Josh Reynolds 2 years 8mil year 1 cap hit 3mil Reynolds has added some stability to this offense and makes a lot of sense to keep him around. He makes for a reliiable #2 guy, but I also wouldn't be upset if we added some talent that pushed him down the depth chart to #4.

Release Trey Flowers. This is a foregone conclusion at this point. We are currently sitting on about 38-39mil in cap space in 2022. Releasing Flowers brings us just under 50mil. With these re-signings we are brought back down to 35mil. The Lions rookie class will cost roughly 10mil in cap space and we need to set aside another 5mil for the season so that brings us to 20mil in cap space to spend in free agency.

Marcus Williams, S - 5 years, 65mil, year 1 cap hit 7mil This has been my #1 target for a long time. He will bring stability we haven't had at safety since Glover Quinn left. I think his presence allows Walker to play more freely and will give a guy like Amani even more confidence to take more chances knowing he has Williams back there. This is the type of addition that can really elevate the entire defense and is well worth the money.

DJ Chark, WR - 2 years 16mil, year 1 cap hit 6mil Chark is a guy that will not break the bank and offers a skillset we desperately lack, speed. He would do wonders for our running game as more often than not you will have to keep a safety over the top and could be deadly on play action here as he has the ability to quickly get over the top of LB'ers who step up. Love the value and fit in this offense.

BJ Hill 3 years 18mil, year 1 cap hit 4mil He has ben a very solid player for most of his career, but was stuck in a talented D-Line rotation with the Giants. Was able to get more snaps in Cincy this year and has played very well. He is almost 26 years old and would fit in very nicely as a guy who can kick inside on passing downs and offer some pass rush and has played as a 3-4 DE before.

Mo Alie Cox 2 years, 6mil, year one cap hit 2mil Solid backup TE who can start in a pinch.

Casey Hayward 2 years, 12mil, year one cap hit 4mil Brings a veteran into the mix at CB and insurance in case Okudah struggles in his come back. I believe he will be able to assist in the development of all the young CB's we have back there as well.

That is 23mil in cap space and with the guys place they take of the roster it would actually count closer to 19mil.

Draft Hutchinson, Devin Lloyd, Drake London, Desmond Ridder, then find a backup G/T, TE, S, and a 3-4 DE with the remaining picks.

Offense

QB Goff, Ridder (Boyle on PS?)
RB Swift, Williams, Reynolds, Jefferson
FB Cabinda
WR London, Chark, St. Brown, Reynolds, Cephus, Raymond,
TE Hockenson, Alie Cox, Wright/rookie
LT Decker, rookie
LG Jackson, Kraemar
C Ragnow, Evan Brown
RG Vatai
RT Sewell, Nelson

Defense

DE Brockers, Hill, Onwuzurike, rookie
NT McNeil, Penisini
Edge Hutchinson, R. Okwara, Harris, J. Okwara, Bryant
ILBer Devin Lloyd, JRM, Anzalone, Barnes
CB Okudah, Amani, Hayward, Parker, Jacobs, Melifonwu
S Marcus Williams, Tracy Walker, Will Harris, rookie

Special Teams

K Patterson
P Fox
LS Daly

Really like the potential of the back 7 on defense. The D-line would depend mostly on the development on Onwuzurike and McNeil. On offense we don't need much, but we get a reliable backup TE and add a big physical WR and a deep threat to the guys we already have. If Goff can play like he has this past month, we would be competing for the Aaron Rodgers less NFC North in 2022.

I don?t want Goff as the starting QB. We have a good Oline, good RBs and a good TE. All the things you need to have a young QB succeed. No better time to draft a QB then right now at #2.

If there is actually one who is good then sure. Drafting position over actual good players never works out. I hear ya, I don?t want Goof either. But we need more good players. Then maybe we can be like a Cleveland and have a talented roster with an underperforming qb.

You draft a QB at #2 this year and still have a late 1st and 2nd, along w (2) 1st next year. If we pass on a QB, good chance we?ll have to mortgage future picks to move up next year(assuming we improve). Let the rookie gain experience next seasons w a good TE, RB and OLine, while keeping the draft capital and creating future cap space to build.

the only way you draft a QB #2 this year is if you think they area a franchise QB.

The term franchise QB gets over used. And you don't know until you draft one and watch him play at NFL level. Not sure if QB is a top priority but we need one eventually and no guarantee '23 QB are better than '22 QB's.

well, you don't know if the guy you draft at #2 is better than a guy you get in the 3rd round either...until you watch him play at the NFL level

Like I said I don't know if it's a priority but if Holmes thinks drafting one early you go with it. But point taken.

No guarantee with any player, ever. Based on current data though, 2023 looks to have guys who have greater potential. I would venture to say if the 2022 QBs were in the 2023 draft, the earliest they would be picked is R3, and that would be a reach if in early R3 for the top 3 in the group, and the others would be R4 at best.

Yeah but just saying draft a qb at 2 doesn?t magically make this prospect worth the number 2 overall pick. Mitch Trubisky was taken high but it doesn?t make him better than he is. You take a qb at 2 if there is a qb truly the talent of a number 2 on the board. If not, you take the player who is at whatever position and have a real stud. You find a qb when there is one to find. I think Sam Howell is the only qb worth taking that high. But that?s just me.

Lions sign Jared Pinkney off Rams? practice squad. So basically they re-added a guy they already had.

There is not a QB worthy of that 2nd pick. When you pick that high you better be damn sure you are getting a stud. No way I pass on Hutchinson/Hamilton for any QB in this class.

The facts are that Campbell and Holmes are fully committed to Goff in 2022 and barring a catastrophic injury, nothing will change that.

Nothing wrong with sitting a guy and letting him learn for a year. But I guess in 2021 teams don't do that. This is the way I look at it.. if Holmes and company can draft and coach well it won't matter who we take. If they can't draft well or coach it won't matter who they take.

I don't suspect they will draft a QB but I won't be mad if they did.

I mean, people need to ask themselves. Would they rather have Baker Mayfield or Myles Garrett? It?s not a hard answer lol. Dunno if they will be as good as Garrett, but I?ll take the actual stud at his position all day.

People also need to ask themselves, would you rather have a Jeff Okudoh or a Justin Herbert? It?s not a hard answer. I think we can all agree Goff isn?t the solution. We have the #2 pick, it?s time to get the QB of the future.

Id typically agree that if youre picking in the top 3 picks QB should be on the table. But i think 2022 is different...there truly isnt that top tier QB in this class. Its a bunch of rd 2 guys that will be picked in rd 1 because of need. Thats not what you pick in the top 3. The talent is at the edge and OT positions...and we dont need an OT.

I didnt hate the idea of drafting Herbert at the time....mainly cause i was a "Stafford hater". But there truly would have been an outrage if that shitty front office not only ruined the team but drafted Stafford replacement at the time....they simply couldnt. Which means they werent a very good front office.

Lions fans should try to remember the Stafford years. Most people will say he is a pretty good QB. If the Lions could take a QB with Stafford's ability this year at #2 they should take him. But...you also have to remember that it seemed that they could never put a good team around him. I think they should build a good team first and if a QB falls to them, then take him. Take a flyer on a guy in the 3rd this year. Maybe next year grab one in the 1st or 2nd. If they draft well, by year three they should have built up a good enough team that the QB shouldn't matter too much. Any average QB can take a good team to the playoffs.

It?s early, give it to the end of March and they?ll be 2 QBs that separate themselves from the pack.

I live in Oregon and a huge Ducks fan. I?ve always like Thibs but I don?t see him as an elite DE. He came w a lot of hype, had some good games but didn?t have the overall game impact I wanted to see. He?s quick and athletic but don?t feel the production lived up to his hype. I?m definitely no scout but I didn?t see a #1 or #2 pick in him. I?ll trust my Detroit brothers on Hutchison. Hutchison or QB at #2 and I?m leaning QB w how this team is built and current draft capital.

I watched one game where he absolutely wrecked it. But I think someone made a point that he will have too many games where you barely notice he?s in it, he?ll get a sack on one play and that?ll be it. I honestly don?t know who I want in the draft anymore. I?m assuming Hutchinson is no longer a possibility.
