MLB and fans alike are wondering whether Jackson Jobe makes the Opening Day roster.
Harris and Hinch brought him up at the very end of last year and he pitched only 4 innings. But he is simply one of MLB’s best prospects, including the honor of being MiLB’s best pitcher.
Should Jobe make the Opening Day roster, he becomes eligible for the new Prospect Promotion Incentive (PPI) program. If he stays on the roster for the full year and finishes among the top 3 in any major award, his team wins an extra draft pick after the 1st round. He would earn a full year of service time.
However, if the Tigers don’t call him up for 16 days (there are a lot of off-days), they would receive an extra year of service time from him. But he wouldn’t qualify for PPI.
This new rule was put into place by the CBA to help inspire teams from manipulating service time.
Should the Tigers put Jobe on the Opening Day roster for a chance to earn an extra draft pick?
Or should they prioritize keeping him Toledo for at least 2 weeks in order to keep him on the team longer?
For the record, Scott Boras is Jobe’s agent.
In a similar circumstance, Pirates’ pitcher Paul Skenes was left off the Opening Day roster last year. He made his debut in early May, won Rookie of the Year (and top 3 candidate for Cy Young) but because he did not spend a full year on the roster, Pittsburgh did not receive a top draft pick.
Should the Tigers put Jackson Jobe on the Opening Day roster?
1. Yes, that extra draft pick would be nice!
2. No, that extra year of service time is more valuable.
