Adios Joe

FTA: "Paterno will be offered a generous retirement package from the school in exchange for agreeing to never discuss the situation regarding Sandusky with anyone other than the authorities."

well, that's that I guess. What an awful way for his career to end.

I almost feel bad for him. I mean he did report it.

He also let the man hang around campus and was aware of Sandusky's continued contact with kids (charity / recruitment / camps , etc). He knew that the report went nowhere and didn't bother to follow up with the police. It's laughable to suggest reporting it to campus police and calling it a day lives up to any reasonable level of moral responsibility.

I have lost every ounce of respect I ever had for Joe Paterno. This case is so sickening that I honestly would like to see the Big 10 kick Penn State football out of the conference. I know that might sound crazy or extreme, but I think they 100% deserve it. This monster/predator still had an office on campus as of last weekend. Penn State did absolutely nothing to rid themselves of this evil. Instead they allowed it to continue, giving Sandusky a ridiculous retirement package and office on campus. Basically rewarding him for his sick actions. Extreme actions against Penn State and their football program are necessary because they harbored a monster who preys on children. Get them the fuck out of the Big 10 and good riddance.

I think Joe will leave this earth within 2 years. He always struck me as the kind of guy that would coach till the end. This situation will weigh heavily on him, as it should.

BTW, I didn't open this thread at first because I thought it was another Joe Frazier thread.

I havent read to in depth about it but the guy turned his friend in and the authorities didn't do anything about it. Would be hard to turn a true friend in for anything even if it is as sickening as this. I place the blame on the authorities, not on Paterno.

Beez, you should read the grand jury report. You may just change your opinion.

read it - and Im an attorney as well. From what I read, the guys who will be in big trouble will be curly and shultze - definitely perjured themselves.

Paterno while he might have had a moral obligation to inform "the police" does his lack of reporting amount to a criminal act? IMHO hardly seeing as he was NOT the direct witness to the events. He heard of it through an assistant, and as such couldn't be assured of the voracity of the report. IMHO he did what he should have which was tell his Superior to allow them to investigate it further.

In my opinion it is asinine to crucify Joe. Imagine had he told the police and the report turned out to be false - talk about disparaging a persons character damn.

A CEO running a company with accountants 'cooking the books' may not be personally responsible for instructing them to do it or even be aware of it, but that CEO gets shit-canned every time.

Paterno needs to be gone, along with all others involved. Period.

Everything is great with your analogy except that the CEO would be the AD Curly, or Shultz, not JoePa, and the wrong doer would be Sandusky - more of a co-worker of JoePa not a subordinate.

Agreed though that the CEO gets shitcanned - which is why Curly and Shultz will be gone.

However I dont agreed that JoePA should suffer this. Do I think he will be forced into resignation by the board of trustees? Yes. DO I think its fair - hell no.

Anyway, story is just breaking - AP reporting that Joe Paterno will retire at the end of this season.

I forget how literal attorneys can be .... but to be clear, Paterno is "the CEO" of Penn State and has far, far, far more influence and power than any AD or school President.

I'm tired of hearing Paterno is the CEO...thats like saying Brady is the CEO of the Pats.....Paterno and Brady are the "face" of the organziation, not the CEO. Theres a huuuge difference. Seems to me Paterno did his job. He "heard" about some disgusting unlawful acts...not knowing if they were true he reported them anyway to be safe. The authorities seemingly dropped the ball. No love lost for Paterno so far for me...I will read more in depth later though.

Influence and power sure, but you're ignoring the practical requirements & official responsibilities of the job. The order to fire someone, investigate the incident, arrest Sandusky, etc. those aren't going to come from Paterno, nor should they.

I agree with azian6er.

Paterno probably could have done more, and should definitely resign after this, but the righteous moral crusaders casting stones on message boards need to check themselves... 99% of you hypocrites would not have done anything more than JoePa did in the same situation. hell you wouldn't even last as a head coach as long as he did because you would've fucked it up a long time before that.

Paterno certainly wasn't "Saintly" here, and like I said, he should resign, but the abuse he's getting is WAY out of line, and out of proportion to his conduct here.

TinselWolverine[/color]]Reporting on ESPN that Tom Ridge may take over as University President.

he did a heckuva job as the head of Dept. of Homeland Security after 9/11. I found his 1950's sitcom dad appearance very reassuring.

I'm not acting as a moral crusader, nor am I castigating Joe Paterno. He should be dismissed now, and let the criminal process run its course. And from information that came out today, McQuery apparently was very explicit in recounting to Paterno what he'd seen the prior day ... Victim 1

Captain down with the ship ...
Scandalized public company CEO fired after stock scandal ...

No need to parse words or get buried in the semantics of university heirarchy -- almost 14yrs after the fact and nine victims coming public and/or testifying before a grand jury. Personally I'd hate to think that one of my best friends would be capable of doing what Paterno's best friend was doing, but if it ever came to my attention, I'd have done something.

We're not talking about some adult female PSU employee accusing Sandusky of "sexual harassment" because he called her "sweetheart" and complimented her on her tight sweater or anything. That sort of thing gets brushed aside all the time
