Bowl Games

I'm talking about the bowl record of conferences, which fluctuates every year depending on whatever random matchups are set up. I think that in specific literally has no bearing on decisions.

Not all kids care. Bowl season is propped up by Espn, though, and these kids watch the games. It's just fact. If I was considering a school, I sure as hell am considering the conference strength. I want to play against better teams. I can tell you right now, seeing as how the Big10 is recruiting and beating up on teams in these bowl games, I'm staying away from the Pac12.

Terrible decision by McSorley. Possible shovel pass interception. Have no idea who he was throwing it to, because Barkley was wide open in front of him.

The Big Ten Network and to a degree the various Fox networks has taken a SUBSTANTIAL revenue stream away from ESPN.

ESPN and ABC Disney used to make money off of way more games of the marquis B1G teams, either through coverage on the various ESPN network, or through the packaging of the various regional ABC broadcasts on the College Game premium package.

Meanwhile ESPN has partnered with the SEC in its own conference television network.

The favoritism ESPN shows to the SEC is all about the money.

I agree that recruits look at conference strength more than people think and bowl games are a big part of what shapes that perception. Surely at least a few years ago the opportunity to play in "the SEC" was a lure for recruits for even some of the lesser schools. I think that is less the case now for the SEC because Bama has become TOO dominant to where being at another school to try and take them on seems less attractive, and also some schools are having issues making the right coaching hires.

And we've kind of seen this coming now for awhile with Meyer coming in, then Harbaugh, and Franklin turning PSU around so quickly, D'Antonio keeping MSU on the map that the Big Ten is on an upswing. So I suppose the Bowl results are reflection of that more than the cause, but it still kind of keeps the cycle going. Get a good coach in place, get better recruits, win games, beat other conferences in bowl games to raise perception, get better recruits.....

Agree, ESPN makes it a huge deal because of their deal.

Did you see what they are doing at Northwestern? Fitzgerald got the school to make a sports complex on the friggn water and it's going to look space age. They will take recruits from us and other big time programs in the future. Fitzgerald runs a good program.

Excellent explanation and insight

I tend to agree. A lot of it depends on matchups and some years a conference wins a bunch of close games and other years they lose a bunch of close games. I think the Big Ten not getting anyone into the playoff has created a trickle down of favorable (or at least winnable) matchups in the other bowls.

However, I agree with tinsel in that if the Big Ten was 0-5 right now even if the factors mentioned above are at play, ESPN and others would be all over it.

This is because dumb ass Delaney set up the bowl contracts without considering the playoff. He matched up the teams by how they would finish, then when a team goes to the playoff, the big 10 gets screwed as everyone moves up a notch. Well, it didn't work that way this year, because OSU got hosed, so now you are seeing more accurate match-ups and it's paying off for the big 10, so far.

If Franklin doesn't fuck this up, it will be another beat down for the Big10 over the Pac12.

Okay? Who gives a crap what "they" talk about? Do we feel better that Northwestern (who was one of the better teams in the B10) beat a garbage Kentucky? Or Purdue needed late magic to win a battle of two bad football teams?

The only thing that matters is winning your conference and doing something on the national stage (playoff). Having your conference win a bunch of meaningless bowl games doesn't speak to the quality of the league. No one will ever bring this stuff up in a few years and say, "Oh yeah, B10 dominated that 2015 bowl season."

Right, because they didn't dominate the 2015 bowl season.

As was mentioned, though, a year from now when they are thinking of hosing another big 10 team out of the playoff, they might remember how the big 10 performed this year and it might make an impact...might

I'll believe NW will beat out Michigan for recruits when I see it.

Man, McSorley's been real loose with the football all game. ABout the only thing keeping Washington with a glimmer of hope.

Here's the thing: While some posting here claim there are too many bowls, and the bowls don't matter...here some of them are, never the less, posting about what's happening during the games.

Now, I don't have a law enforcement/investigative background like you do...but I don't think it takes Sherlock Holmes to figure out that those people are nevertheless watching the games.

College fans - some anyway - like to watch the bowls and root for the conference their team is in.

Back in the days before the internet, I would be listening to sports talk radio - national shows, I mean - and fans whose teams from their conference's team were having a good bowl season, would call in and brag about that.

And there are a lot of B1G haters out there; and in seasons when the B1G wasn't doing so hot, those fans would call in to razz B1G fans.

So to answer the question, who cares about these bowls? - Well, some people do.

I don't care about daytime soap operas, but some people do - hey, they can if they wanna.

Some college fans are gonna be glad when the conference they're most closely linked to does well, whether it's random match ups or whatever reason.

I would say, okay - if a person claims not to care...who cares?

I don't care.

But I am gonna laugh at them a little, watching the games at the same time claiming not to care.
