Broyles

And if you have a career ender day one? Not getting any tv or coaching job them. End up working at Kmart. An education is nice to have..

You can always go back and finish school though. You can't go back to your prime athletic days and make millions of dollars again.

Tom, it's not raw salary that they are strictly getting. They have other outside sources coming into their pocket.

I'm being sarcastic about the 1/16th. The bottom line is that the average professional athlete who carves out a 5-10 year career should NEVER have to worry about financial problems. They do because they are dumb. And a bachelor's degree can be earned at any time. You do realize that if Broyles left after his junior year, he would have a year's worth of classes left, which he could do easily point at any time in his life.

A guy like Broyles makes a minimal amount of money on the side. He might get a few thousand here or there for appearance fees but that's it.

As far as him leaving early...any player that is a lock to go in the first two rounds of the NFL draft should do so...that I agree with. Nobody is leaving college and making $2.2M in two years! Grab that $$ while you can!!

You take the average player, let's just say he makes 2 million a year. I think that's pretty fair and even on the low end. If that player plays 5 years, and makes roughly 10 million, that is MORE than enough to be set for a LONG time. Give him another 1-2 million extra money that he makes from endorsements and appearances. 12 million dollars in a 5 year career. If he's not able to make that work, that's sad.

Once you stop it's not easy going back..and when these particular players don't make it they need a job and can't afford school.

What if he plays 6 months and doesn't have guarantee money.

Mitch, the average player does not play 6 months. That's why those guys take out ridiculous insurance policies that will pay them more than I will make in a lifetime if they are hurt.

And if he gets hurt, his life isn't over. He can turn around and go right back to school. Completing your education and leaving an opportunity on the table to make a ton of money is silly.

Sure, those guys who don't make it can afford 50k a year to go back to school. We hear it all the time of guys getting a second or third chance when found working in a stock work or a grocery store.

There are plenty of guys who leave early and go undrafted and never get a chance..they certainly can't afford school..and there a lot of those.

It's not 50,000 dollars to go back to school for one year.

This conversation has gone away from where we started. I am talking about the average, professional athlete. The fact that they go broke AFTER this career is over, is silly. And them having a bachelor's degree doesn't suddenly prevent them from being stupid. I know plenty of people who have their degrees and couldn't tell their right hand from their left.

It's not about being stupid but a degree is better way to get a better job. Depends where you go, so 20-25 then.

And the average, professional athlete don't work in TV or coaching or have enough money for their life. They need a job..

According to the NFL PA the average length of an NFL player's career is 3.3 years.

Take a look at this article.

The NFL is the worst by far of the maintaining careers because of the physical nature, definitely not arguing that.

The bottom line is that when you make such a large amount of money in 5-10 years, you shouldn't go broke. Ever. I'll work my entire life to make 1-2 million dollars. These guys get it in a day. I can live on my measly salary. I don't feel any sympathy for guys who make bank for a decent amount of time and are suddenly confused about why they are broke.

Not to mention the lifestyle they get on the outside during their prime. These guys can do whatever the hell they want, can basically break the law and get away with it. I don't feel bad for them. They get to go through college and live like gods for free. And even if they don't make it out and carve out a professional career, they got a free degree.

I agree with you. I actually find it funny when these clowns that made tens of millions go broke. But, the majority of them don't make as much as you think.

No, but like I said, even the guys that are pulling in 1-2 million a year and play for 5 years should not be financially strapped. Just live modest, don't be a moron, and you'll be set for a LONG amount of time.

but most of them are morons!

Lots of people can't afford school....so they take out student loans. The possibility of getting a career ending injury on day one was mentioned....yeah sure that could happen. You could also suffer an injury in school, flunk out, get struck by lightning etc. if you remain in school. There's risks either way. The risk of a career ending injury so early on in your professional career is not large enough to give up the reward of millions of dollars (assuming we're talking about early round draft picks). Maybe guys who project to be late round picks or undrafted free agents should take a little more consideration on their options, but if you're looking at the big bucks I say go for it.

But most don't play 5-6 years. They play 2, 1 or never.

Mitch, the entire basis of my conversation is about the average athlete that plays 5 years. Guys that play 0-1 years aren't the talking point of my discussion.

Maybe he actually wanted a college education? Do former nfl players go bankrupt because they can't do a thing outside of playing football? Jesus Hughes

ya cause just cause youre talented enough to go to the nfl and make millions after your soph year it totally means you can never continue your education and get a degree...../rollseyes He didn't go to the draft early cause hes a small slot receiver that isn't very talented like the other small talented slot wrs that have been omming out like tavon austin or cooks.
