C-Webb To Be Honorary Captain

When I look at articles about this, it seems that Webber was being interviewed on a radio show and Harbaugh called in and verbally made the invitation on the air and no particular game was specified.

Don’t know how official that really is.

We’ll see what happens.

EDIT:

Here is a link with audio of the on air invite.

I think one of them made some comment about "Us #4's need to stick together." Not sure if Harbaugh said that or Webber.

maybe, having also gone through a bit of a "prodigal son" thing, Harbaugh has some empathy for Webber?

Harbaugh never really did anything wrong though. He just attacked Michigan, then gradually things healed.

in Webber's case what's really galling is that he can't even admit it after the fact... I guess because he pretty much screwed everyone, Ed Martin included, to save his own ass.

But he was 18... I think most adults look back on their own history and can say "I'm glad I wasn't under as much scrutiny as he was at that age." He can explain it that way, and move on "Hey, I was 18 you know? I wouldn't do it the same way today."

instead, we're left with the assumption he feels he did nothing wrong, doesn't owe the public anything, and WOULD do it the same way today.

He's his own man, and doesn't owe anyone an apology... he also doesn't deserve "honorary captain" status.

Well, I agree with everything you wrote there, MCHamp, except that he was 18. He left Michigan after his sophomore season, so at that point, he wasn't 18.

It was Webber who said it.

Later in the interview it came up that Webber has been involved in some kind of not that well known scholarship to Michigan since he first entered the NBA.

From their discussion seems Webber and Harbaugh have had some kind of relationship over the years.

Seems Webber was on the air participating with the station for this fundraiser for Mott. Webber offered a studio visit to the TNT studios to the top donor.

Maybe the would connect the welcome back ceremony with some philanthropic event for Mott, since the invitation occurred in that context.

Since the barn door seems to have already have been opened anyway as it were, so to speak.

The entire audio is about a half hour, for those who didn’t listen to the whole thing.

everything else I know about Webber makes me think he's a decent guy.

It's just that this one (1) thing is a pretty big deal.

I?m listening to that radio station online right now. They?re about to take calls gauging reaction to this Chris Webber story.

I suspect Jimmy has that authority to ask anyone he wants to be honorary capt. Hey, does it come with some kind of payment? :)

The ones that Webber really needs to come clean and apologize to are Coach Fisher and his teammates that did not take any money. He tainted their legacy at Michigan.

Ha!

Maybe they?ll link it to a payment to a charity.

That could possibly make it more palatable to people who aren?t crazy about the idea.

The current Shoe scandal featuring Arizona, MSU and others blows away the Ed Martin scandal by many many miles.

And let me add to my post ....

Ed Martin was the guy in the hood who ran the numbers game and worked the system. He gave kids with NOTHING a pair of shoes, some pocket cash and other AAU-related enticements. Was he an "upstanding guy" ...? Not really. But was he malicious or corrupted or fixing games...? No. Not at all.

By the time the Fab5 was what it was - his largest and most obvious opportunity ever - the money was bigger but in the end it was basically a guy who steered kids to Michigan basketball. Clearly Fisher was aware, as would have been Frieder (and dare I say Bo?) before him and there is no way the coaches and admin wouldn't have seen signs ..

But the SEC football BagMen make Ed Martin look like a rube. They make him out to be some low level Ghetto Uncle who convinced kids by using his means, to go to Michigan. What's happening TODAY at SEC football programs blows away anything Ed Martin did.

And then there's Northwestern University - the Academic and Integrity of the BigTen with a POINT SHAVING SCANDAL involving top HS recruits from hotbeds like Indiana who FIXED GAMES FOR MOBSTERS and were found guilty.

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about Northwestern ....or Illinois and really the only reason Chicago All-Star Juwan Howard came to Ann Arbor instead of Urbana-Champaign, instead of Ed Martin.

To me, its time to get over shit. I understand the resentment and opinion, but let's fucking forgive Chris Webber and move on as a family.

Well it seems opinions are quite split.

So if it?s going to happen, as I suggested in a few posts back? Split the baby.

Tie Webber?s Welcome home to some kind of charity event fundraising for CS Mott and maybe Webber?s own scholarship foundation.

Based on the number of people who are willing to forgive Chriss There are probably a number of them who are highrollers who would be willing to kick in some bucks To charity for a photo op Or a luncheon or something.
