Caldwell's Staff

And the Ravens are interviewing Linehan. What does that say about them?

Lost Pitta and Boldin. He was great at calling plays with plenty of weapons. Only a deep threat in Smith/Jones and Rice with a bad hip with a bad Oline, plus new blocking scheme. Not Caldwells fault.

yet Baltimore wanted to let him go??

That they are looking for an OC and want to interview a guy that ran a high octane offense? Does anybody think the Linehan was a terrible OC? They did put up points....right? I would say that most people thought that Swartz was the biggest problem followed by Gunther. That is what I felt.

Turnovers(players mainly but OC too) and developing/ignoring the flaws of Stafford is on Linehan. Linehan would still be here if things weren't partly his fault.

I think this is the sort of thing that needs to come from the head coach (demand that the OC and QB coach try and fix him). I do like that in Calwell...demand it out of your QB...don't just suggest it!

I like the hiring of Lombardi, but I wonder if Stafford could possibly get a bit of a chip on his shoulder over it. It's like they hired a guy specifically to whip him into shape.

Pleased with the hire, he's been part of some great offenses in NO. Also looks like he's been all over the place as a coach, he's been a coach for D-lines, TEs, OTs, RBs, and QBs. Hopefully all those position experiences will carry over into a centralized OC position.

And that is the problem... Can Matt look in the mirror and say to himself a lot of his problems are a me thing... He needs help to just tweak his skills and put him over the top. The question is will he buy in and listen..

Just glad it wasn't Culley. I'm sorry, but being a WR coach for 30+ years without ever being promoted is a red flag to me.

It's a crucial moment for him. If he wants it, the Lions are better off, if he doesn't, well then he's gone in a few years and the Lions start over with a fresh QB (and probably everything else).

The thing that sucks for Stafford, he's done well. Especially first 10 games. They have moved the ball and scored alot ofpoints. He doesn't get the perks that other lesser QBS have. Seattle and San Frans defense, more turnovers forced from his defense for easy short fields, drop % and penalties (not many on the QB) and calls in the Lions favor. If Stafford isn't top 5, the Lions couldn't overcome it.

But he does need improvement and we'll see if he can lessen the picks and raise the comp %.

It cracks me up that the media is focusing on how these guys have never been coordinators before.

Where do they think coordinators come from if not hiring and promoting successful coaches.

Lombardi looks like a great hire to me. And I don't think he was brought in to "fix" Stafford. It's simple... If you want to build a successful team you hire successful coaches.

Happens all the time in the NFL. I can't even begin to tell you how many position coaches this year have been promoted to an OC or DC. It's normal, it's not just the Lions doing it.

Yeah, Lombardi certainly has a legendary bloodline, but often it is a promotion for an addition to an established HC and his staff, whose GM had fired the previous OC. (like the Ravens might have done to Caldwell) I'd be more comfortable with a promo from OL coach or a lateral move or a former HC, but I ain't running the Lions' popsicle stand.

We will see how this all shakes out next season, but I anticipate at least some instability, inconsistency, and "rookie" mistakes as these hirings under Caldwell will need to grow and learn on the job, and the team will be using a new and different playbook under new coaching So I am not expecting much if any improvement in the Lions overall record from last year at the close of the '14 season.

Lions homers could point to what Reid has done in just one season as HC for the KC Chiefs, but Reid's HCing resume is much longer and he is more experienced than Caldwell while improving that much under a new regime is not common. Not saying that it is impossible for the Lions to improve, but more improbable that the team would gain 4-5 games in the win column.

I browsed Reid's staff, and other than retaining a few coaches on O and D from the previous regime, he brought most of his staff from the Eagles with him to KC. Only major change is his DC Sutton, who was with the NY Jets, as a linebackers coach before serving as the team's defensive coordinator from 2006 to 2008, senior assistant/linebackers coach from 2009 to 2011, and as assistant head coach/linebackers in 2012.

Its not like Caldwell and his entire staff was uprooted and moved to Allen Park, his assembled staff will need to become familiar and comfortable with each other as well, and that, IMO, will take more than just one offseason and pre-season.

Like this hire. Obviously NO's success has a lot to do with Brees, but Peyton knows how to make the most out of their talent and schemes well. Hopefully Lombardi brings a little bit of that with him.

Someone posted it's the closest we'll get to a Lombardi trophy, lol.

Ain'ts fans have no room to talk shit, as it wasn't that long ago, when they were still wearing paper sacks over their heads. In fact they were one of the first fanbases to do so, IIRC.
