Call the men in white coats

i understand but if you can get him in the 3rd why waste a 2nd?

You obviously don't understand if you asked again.

If the Lions want Batiste, and no one is saying they do, and they feel strongly about taking him, and feel another team may jump in the late 2nd or early 3rd, they will take him. Period.

Only the mock drafts guarantee he will be there in the third. The other NFL GMs don't.

terrible, IMO

Not getting a solid WR...and no, Tate solo when CJ is out is not enough... will be a continuation of the vulnerability demonstrated last year. CJ goes down, the O does NOTHING! will a new coach and OC change that??? highly doubtful....

Thanks for coming out then. Usually if your #1 goes down, chances are your team is going to struggle. And Tate was a great addition to this offense.

that happened with Best too and look how that ended up

So what exactly do you suggest? Maybe Mayhew should create a poll and ask everyone how they feel about the prospects available?

Injuries happen. It's not going to stop them from making the picks they feel are right the next time around.

Tate was a #1 in a run first offense last year and put up some pretty decent numbers.

#1 by default though. Nothing against Tate but they had high hopes for Harvin and Rice. Tate stepped up big time and proved his worth.

Yeah I was trying to show if CJ goes down, he should be more than capable of handling the #1 reps. The offense would suffer but not nearly as bad as last year.

I don't think Tate can handle the double, let alone triple, teams that CJ faces. Overload to ensure Tate is a non-issue still allows the D to defend vs the RBs, TEs, etc. Getting another WR means the O remains far more consistent even without CJ. Last year we all saw what the team did when CJ went down. The only game they were remotely competitive in was due to Special Teams stepping up huge. Outside of that they were non-existent and the D had an easy time defending against them.

Getting another top WR to help Tate if/when CJ is out (even for a play or two) is a desperate necessity for this team, far more than any other position on the field...possibly even combined. They can get a scrub who was cut in the preseason to fill any of the other positions, every time they have tried to use a scrub at WR it has failed. A top tier WR is a MUST have in this draft.

With some teams sure but other teams sure but better deeper teams they manage. That's what we need. And it's not like he just struggled he basically did nothing.

It's not just the number one reps though, who moves up to two: Oglevy (sp), Durham? We need someone else ..

I still think we get a wr in the first 2 picks. But I feel a lot better with them stepping in as a #2 instead of the #1 like last year.

Really can't predict injuries but if CJ does go down as far as who is two or one at that point defends on who we draft. Imo, if it's Watkins be goes to one, if someone else Tate goes to one.

gotta argue this. "proved his worth" is debatable since Kearse and Baldwin stepped up huge to the point that SEA, who has a very strong front office from owner to GM, actually thought Tate was worth nothing now that they had UDFAs producing just as much as he was. So much so in fact, that they even resigned Sidney Rice who was injured all of last year instead of Tate. Its true he probably priced himself out of SEA and its obvious tate wants to get paid on his first contract post rookie deal...most guys would. But to say he proved his worth is stretching it considering SEA didn't think he was worth it to even offer him a discount deal. They offered him a laughable worse than hometown discount deal....a slap in the face type deal. You don't find it odd that we were like the only team involved with him? We offered him a deal he couldn't pass up....which in my opinion means mayhew over paid for him. It only takes 1 dummy.....mayhew is that dummy more often than not...

I also think if we get another solid receiver in the draft, we should be able to give CJ some plays off during the game. Hopefully helping to keep him healthy.

Tony mentioned it a few days ago and I agree, if we go after Watkins (and he's not my first option) then if CJ leaves or we don't want to resign him then we have a viable number one already here. Down the road.

no, i don't find it odd at all. in fact, unless a team matches, there's hardly ever a bidding war in FA.

when's the last time there was? for anybody?

gotta get your Mayhew bashing in somehow, even when pretty much everybody knows it was a great signing.

Detroit was the perfect option for him. A stud #1 to take all the presure off him. He is going to see 1 on 1's all game. WR was one of our biggest needs and we got one of the best in FA. The other option was Decker...who I think had inflated stats playing with Manning or pick 2 wr's in the first 3 rounds.

I commend you on having an opinion on the matter...that's a rarity lately on this board. Now Tate just needs to catch 80 balls and be a 1k yard WR for him to produce at a level hes getting paid at. If not, then a 500k rookie would have been just fine....no big deal....we'll see how it works out. Im still weary that Stafford can get another WR not named CJ 1k yards. And if Watkins ends up being the pick....you would have been better off burning all the money in a house fire that you paid Tate....atleast insurance would have covered some of that loss.
