CJ in FA

Mitch[/color]]Sure they can.

CJ will be the highest paid WR. If Stafford continues to play like he has been he will be one of the highest paid QBs. The same with Suh. I guess you could keep them all if you want a bunch of scrubs to go along with them. That isn't going to win you any super bowls.

neither is letting your 3 best players walk in FA

Draft well with few mistakes and with rookie cap figures you can build a good team through the draft that is not too expensive.

I agree with that...so what's the solution. I think IF Stafford is as good as we all think he can be (I was really impressed this year) I think of the three the one that is most easily replaced is CJ. Look at the top QBs right now. Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Eli, Romo, Stafford. Other than Jennings there aren't any stud WRs in that group and without Rodgers I doubt Jennings is a top 10 WR. I think if you have a great QB you don't need a great WR. In todays NFL I don't think you need a great WR if you have a top QB.

Welkers an ALL Pro who is about to get paid , Cruz and Nicks are studs , Dez and Austin aren't to shabby either.

All of those guys are good. Cruz and Nicks are also good but guys like them are a dime a dozen in the draft (just look where they were drafted). Same with Austin. Dez is good too but not great. If the Pats pay Welker like a top 5 WR they are crazy. His success is mostly due to his QB.

Welker puts up great numbers with Cassell at QB...the guy is the best possesion guy in the NFL.

Nicks was a 1st round pick...lol

Tom,

Your argument has more holes than swiss cheese. Im going out to eat with the fam but if this is still going on when I get back maybe I will chime in in more depth.

For now though I will simply point out every one of those QB's you listed offenses are absolutely loaded and I would be shocked for you to argue otherwise. Yes maybe one lacks a deep threat or the other doesn't have a great Oline or running game but it's pure ignorance to claim that any of those QB's aren't throwing to loaded WR's/TE's corps.

I never said those guys weren't good. Nicks was a late round pick...nothing special. Welker too....but Brady has made him...put him on a team with an average QB and he is just another good WR...not an all pro. All I am saying is great QBs don't need a great WR. In the grand scheme of things a 12-15M per year WR is a waste of money if you have an eilte QB. I am starting to think that Stafford is going to be an elite QB.

Guys like them are a dime a dozen??? I am sure there are a few teams that would like to hit on some WRs...Rams, Browns, Panthers, Jaguars to name a few...And we should probably also make something else clear...Calvin Johnson has more ability than any other WR in the league. Players like him do not come around very often. If Detroit was going to let a guy like him go I would hope they would get a decades worth of first round picks. A slight exaggeration but he should get much more than what Detroit got for Roy Williams.

They are loaded with good skill players....well balanced and no one skill player making huge money besides the QB. That's how you win championships...not by paying a WR QB money. CJ is going to get QB money.

FYI, Nicks was a 1st round pick. Cruz and Welker however were undrafted. Just goes to show you never know.

CJ 1900 yards in 17 games lol........and didn't have a 100 game for 5 games straight after stafford broke his finger against denver...man..he coulda done something even more special this year

I heard on the radio today that if the Lions were to franchise tag CJ they would have to pay him 26 million in 2013, and if they did I the following year again it would rise to 31 million dollars.. This worries me because Megatron has huge leverage with the team..he can potentially make as much money in 3 years as Fitz will make in 8 years..

I don't see many reasons for CJ to sign an extension anytime soon other than if he wants to stay here and thinks he can win a SB and signs a long term contract.

Well that's what we have to hope...that's it's not all about money. Sign for a boatload (but not for every penny you possibly can) and let the organization sign another player(s) to help you win your super bowl.

The other thing with guys like Staff, CJ and Suh is they already got paid. They weren't 6th round picks who were grossly underpaid for 3 or 4 years and now they need to cash in on that first huge payday. They've already had a contract that made them beyond filthy rich.

I guess we'll see what happens but I actually think he'll restructure his deal. The issue I'm worried about is how much does he listen to his agent or the union...cause those are the guys that want you to get every last penny. I wish more guys would take the Mark McGwire approach...drop their agent, hire a lawyer to check the contract and sign your own deal.

not sure how the WR tag jumps from 9 million to 26 million in a year or to 31 million in 2 years....lol

the tag numbers actually go DOWN with the new CBA instead of up.

I heard mike Valenti say that the franchise tag is either the avg of the top 4 salarys of that position the previous year or 125% of the players previous salary, whichever is more. I think CJ will get 22 million next season with bonuses and shit so that's how he will get 26...atleast that it was Valenti said..I don't know enough about the NFL cap to validate that

that is correct....forgot about the 120% rule and Calvins 2 bonuses that put an extra 9 million on his pay check for 2012.

guess he wont be franchised then.
