Revolutionary movement engages in violence in a campaign to oust the foreign opium/drug cartels, crony capitalist diplomats, the corrupt warlords & aristocracy that had been oppressing the nation for centuries, founding a stable, prosperous nation-state that has gone on to become a world power in a few decades.
Byco: "Yeah, but they weren't very nice about the overcoming centuries of corruption and oppression part. Foo."
"Weren't very nice"?
I thought they killed millions.
Must be thinking of somebody else.
I don't think it's being ignored or simplified to a matter of freedom, but the murder, violent oppression, and corruption hasn't stopped. For the record, I don't condone murder. But I don't think it's fair to willfully ignore centuries of murder, violent oppression, and corruption, and take that empty-headed "They must hate us for our freedom" position when we discover some other people on the planet don't like us.
EDIT: or didn't like their oppressors, who we happened to be allied with, and supporting with our tax dollars...

we're guilty of it too! we're bombing and embargoing countries around the world right now. So I think it's important to provide a full context, lest we come to erroneous conclusions about things...

through state sponsored corporate espionage, genocide, oppression of the working class, slavery, horrendous human rights violations, rampant corruption, etc, etc
we were talking about China, not the United States of America or the UK
I love some good context. But what erroneous conclusion are you talking about?
Is Mao the #1 killer in history?
Well, when I did a search engine search for ?most prolific despots in world history? the various lists had some differences, but by and large generally the rankings were Mao at the top, followed by Stalin and Hitler.
Pol Pot and Genghis Khan tended to be on most of the lists too.
Now, who knows how much of that is related to the xenophobia and the anti-Asian sentiment that was started when Trump began referring to COVID-19 as ?the China flu??
I think Khan wins % of world population. Or maybe it was % of the world he's an ancestor to. Or maybe both.
But I suppose this is a rabbit hole of details figuring out which deaths count to what person. Either way. Mao was a bad guy who created a government that's bad today.

we're all sitting on land right now that was seized by violent means from people who had been living here before our ancestors came over from Europe, but sure, let's pretend we're exceptionally moral, and to deflect from our own national problems, let's focus on the crimes of other nations (again ignoring our own actions when their crimes are in whole or in part a reaction to things we did to them)
What's your deal?
