Coronainsanity

About 3 months late. But better late than never I suppose.

Looks like that new campaign manager is getting through to Trump after less than a month on the job. Quite impressive really.

If anything, the people I knew on facebook that were skeptical of masks are now dug in more than ever against wearing them. Trump may have helped push this ball to get it rolling, but he's not in control of it.

I saw a headline saying we're at 1,100 covid deaths a day. Dividing the top causes of deaths by that number yields the following. Meaning heart disease is killing 11.3 times as many people (on average, over the course of the year) and flu and pneumonia are roughly equal (to the rate now - over the course of half a year covid killed 3 times as many and the flu hits seasonally, but this is the covid rate at this moment with doctors that know more about treatment and tons more mask wearing.)

It makes me wonder if the flu would kill 3-6 times as many if we didn't have a vaccine. And how much better could we do if everyone got a flu vaccine every year?

I guess there are the masks to consider too. We don't know how much masks would impede flu transmission.

The headline today is 2600 new cases per hour in the US.

The U.S. has been a bit backward on hygiene for a while now. One of the factors cited for why SKorea, Taiwan, Japan, etc. seemed to have managed it better (at least at first) is that their people would more readily wear masks & take precautions.

Do you remember like a year ago... (checking, it was Feb. 2019) where a Fox News host - Pete Hegseth -bragged on the air about not washing his hands?

I have to assume he was honest when he later claimed he was joking* but even if so, it seems like - from the way Republitards have politicized mask wearing, some would also politicize hand-washing and the belief that bacteria exist, like as a means of signaling membership in the Fox News demographic. No?

*although judging from Hegseth's bio & tattoos, he seems like the dumbest - like THE DUMBEST - person ever to graduate from Princeton and Harvard. I didn't think you could easily buy your way into Princeton... Harvard we know all about, but I thought Princeton retained some pretense to meritocracy... but I digress

It's REALLY BAD here in TX, especially in mid-sized towns that have fewer hospital beds.

Fortunately, so far, I haven't had any family members who have had it. I now have some close friends here that have family members & friends who do, and one who died from it (age 32).

The ones who have it have described it as absolutely miserable, and much worse than the flu, much worse than a severe cold...

I was sick with... something like the flu last November. I watched that whole Bad Boy Mowers Bahama Basketball Tournament (remember that?) while bedridden at my parent's house over Thanksgiving. I didn't get tested, but went to the clinic, was diagnosed with the flu, and proscribed a whole bunch of stuff (both anti-viral and anti-bacterial). I was absolutely miserable for like 3-4 days, and the sick feeling lingered for another week after that.

People asked me if I thought I had it, but nobody else in the house got it, and all had gotten flu shots, so I made sure to get a flu shot a month later.

I'm not messing around with my health anymore... that was debilitating enough. I'm definitely getting another flu shot in October.

Harbaugh has the answer. Football. Pansies everywhere don't even know what tough means anymore. They think pissing other people off is tough guy stuff.

I know 3 people that had/have it. Two friends of mine had it and both said it was nothing. My boss has it now. He had the aches for 3 days and still has some symptoms of loss of taste and smell. He also said it isn't bad.

Of course, that doesn't mean that it can't be very severe for others, but those are the only people that described it to me first hand. I certainly don't want it and I am being pretty careful when out and about (wearing masks when inside public places, trying to dine outside when possible)

It's too bad there are so many assholes in our country that can't follow simple rules. My guess is this thing would be very much under control right now if people just followed the rules.

It's highlighting socioeconomics here. We're like 50/50 white/everyone else, but white people make up only 13% of the cases.

I never got a flu shot until an older person in one of our social groups raised the issue. Too self-centered/unaware before that I guess. I just thought about how rarely I get sick.

I have a friend who has around a dozen family members who had it - all got it from 20-something kids who contracted it.

all of those either described it "as bad as the flu" or "worse than the flu," and another who has a roommate who had it and got over it in a week and said it was like a minor sore throat and cold. some of the 12 who said it was bad were having breathing problems, and close to going to the hospital when last I heard. So yeah, severity seems to run the gamut.

The guy who died had been in the hospital for a week, and had largely recovered, but a day or two before he was supposed to be released, I guess it just spiked and overwhelmed him; he died in his hospital bed. Sounds like his whole family was shocked.

yes, same here. Like 60% of those testing positive are hispanic.

I imagine there's a big divide among classes really; if you can work remotely from home, or work alone in a private office, you're less likely to get it, unless you're stupid or unlucky.

If you're working in customer service, or in a job that requires public contact, like most blue collar and service workers, you're more likely to get it, regardless of how careful you are.

It seems that it?s much worse for the people liberals know than it is for people conservatives know.

Maybe that?s why it?s so bad for blacks and Hispanics.

Is there any data on the impact on LGBTQ/Q, or public employee unions or Planned Parenthood?

What about NRA or Right to Life organizations or the Justin Bieber Fan Club?

That explains so much.

You don?t think God sent us the Covid to purge us of liberals, do you?

Like the way he sent them plagues back in the day to free the slaves from Egypt?

Didn?t we have a running joke here once about middle America walling off the liberal East and West Coasts and making them prisons for liberals like ?Escape from New York? and ?Escape from LA??

As I recall, something would ultimately cause them to flood and the prisoners would all drown...not unlike the way the Pharaoh?s Army all drown?

Man, that God just loves using water to screw with people, doesn?t he?

That doesn't sound right. Not sure who I'd blame. It would be quite an escalation from using data and ads for foreign election interference.

I don't remember it specifically, but this does sound right.

64% of republicans dont think 140k people dying is a health crisis lmao. Proof republicans arent really human....and arent very intelligent.

Well I?m not a Republican and I generally don?t vote for candidates in either major party.

That said, you do understand that the vast majority of those who died died of complications due to comorbidities that was soon going to kill them anyway don?t you?

You seem to be able to very easily ignore facts that don?t fit into your narrative.

The average age of death is 76.

When I?m 76 if I?m in poor health, I?m hoping somebody from this board finds me and puts me out of my misery.

I wasnt talking about the people that are dying....nor is the poll. My Facts?...this is a poll. It has nothing to do with me. But if were pointing fingers at peoples facts here then your suggested fact that these people were going to die anyways....is probably the opposite of a fact. The Poll data clearly shows that republicans dont think a virus that is killing THAT many americans is a threat to the health of americans.

Were all going to die at some point. So the whole...they were going to die anyways argument doesnt really work. They are now dead sooner than they would have been otherwise. Republicans are dicks. God is a dick.
