Could Urban be FIRED?

One thing that seems to be slipping through the cracks here is the explanation for why the one staffer was reassigned out of the football program while Smith wasn't. If there's an affair between two people in the football department and the woman was punished and the man wasn't, that should have been addressed.

I agree with the accusation that McMurphy is either acting overly opportunistic or even as if he has some grudge against Meyer or OSU rather than as a dispassionate reporter.

I almost said something before about his wording makes it sound like the arrest/non-arrest report was changed in 2018. I dodn't think we know when the report was changed ( I haven't read everything though). McMurphy doesn't actually make that case and the language is unclear, but in this article, the author read it that way and is writing about it in that way.

I posted an article a while ago from Deadspin where they interviewed McMurphy on why he posted this story on his facebook page.

Basically... it all started when ESPN laid off a bunch of their senior writers (who were under long term contracts), as an under-handed cost cutting measure.

ESPN's rationale was obvious: they had to keep paying on the contracts up until they expired, UNLESS the reporters took another job, or published with another outlet at which time, the obligation would end.

Everyone laid off could either: 1) sit home & keep collecting on their contract, or 2) find a new job.

ESPN figured no reporter would want to be out of the game that long, so they'd take new jobs, and ESPN could get out of their contracts.

McMurphy kept up with his personal contacts though, and someone tipped him off about the Zach Smith thing. He won't say who.

McMurphy then consulted a labor & employment lawyer who told him if he JUST posted the story on his own facebook page, it wouldn't be considered "publishing" under his espn contract, and so he could keep his name out there for breaking the story, while forcing ESPN to keep paying his salary.

So McMurphy clearly has nothing else going on, besides this matter, and much to OSU's and ESPN's chagrin, he's going to keep milking it for all it's worth. but only on his own social media accounts.

That's a smart move.

You could argue that journalistic ethics would be best served here by reporting on all the known facts at once, and not doing this "drip, drip, drip..." thing but McMurphy is just a guy sitting at home with nothing else to do...

I hope reporters keep grilling Urban on why he kept Zach Smith on his staff despite knowing all this all along.

OSU fans will howl about the media "bias" but it's a legit question, and Urban DESERVES to be treated like GARBAGE by everyone.

Here in LA everybody is skewering OSU and Meyer...Zach Smith...actually Buckeye Nation itself...the whole cabal...

Rat Tre$$el cheated, and lied. Meyer cheats, and lied big time ! The Tradition continues at win at all cost O$U! It is amazing to me what that university gets away with.

did they get away with it if they got caught and were penalized?

It was fairly obvious that the no-show jobs and memorabilia sales didn't start (or end) in 2010, but that was the only year they were punished for. and a 1 year post-season ban.

When you won't punish a program sufficiently to deter the behavior they got in trouble for, you're more or less condoning it and encouraging it.

Then even teams that were otherwise unwilling to cheat feel they have to.

This

When Clarrett ratted everyone out about the practices that came to be when Tressel took over(beat Michigan at all costs because we cant beat them), Buckeye Nation came together and everyone blamed Clarrett as a rogue player. The NCAA did nothing about it, even with knowing Tressel's cheating ways at Youngstown. If something big like giving cars and money to players is deemed irrelevant, they feel they can do anything and get away with it. Keep on keepin' on!

To respond to one of the other comments in the thread, McMurphy says he has original police report and the updated version, so its on him to show the diffetences, if there are indeed any. If someone is doctoring reports, that department needs to be flushed for integrity issues. Christ, I would be suspended without pay on the spot and possibly fired, if I went back and changed one of my reports. The Powell PD needs to take a look at itself. Buuuuut, if they are all Buckeye fans, it probably wont change the way they do things.

Big time college sports aren't the same anymore. Men's football, and at some universities, men's basketball, are mostly business. And we all know, when there is big money involved, bad things happen.

A coworker from Ohio described Powell, OH as having been mostly farms and trailer parks up until the 90's when C-suite execs and VPs from Columbus-HQ'd businesses started buying McMansions there. I think he said now it has the highest per capita income in Ohio or something like that.

Cops in such places actually look out for their residents because they know who butters their bread.

I could see them (or their chief) doctoring arrest reports for Zach Smith in 2015.

I was trying to find where I got this idea that OSU punished the person Zach Smith had an affair with, but not Zach. There's very little out there that I can find. I found one part of an OSU message board where someone transcribed some of what McMurphy was saying on the radio.

Did you contact OSU for comment?
I did not contact?Urban is not going to comment. Gene Smith is not going to comment. I did talk to Zach?s attorney (as indicated in the report). I did contact the school. All the information I had was from documentation ? I could have called OSU?s PR department and they would have said ?no comment?. I contacted Zach?s attorney (as reported).
Remember, the reason I wrote this story is because Zach was having sex with a subordinate?taking pictures at an Official OSU function?and taking photos with his school-issued phone.
Zach Smith shared these photos in some way...(McMurphy refused to expound further on what he meant by this, indicating he is protecting a source)
OSU would not confirm the reason [she] was transferred, only the dates of the transfer.
(Somewhere in here, he confirms he was looking at an employee who was transferred XXXX from Football to somewhere else in the Athletics Department.)
Apparently, the ex-husband of the woman in question was also tweeting about this and meeting with investigators and ultimately deleted his account. The story really isn't out there, but if OSU had someone on staff have a relationship with a subordinate and they punished the subordinate and not the superior, that seems like a bigger deal than how many games Meyer is suspended. Especially, if the investigation uncovered it and they are now sweeping it under the rug.

And I'm leaving names and identifying details out of this on purpose and think others should do the same. These aren't public figures and they don't need to be dragged into this any more than they publicize themselves.

"This osu tattoo stuff is silly. Cats been gettin hookups on tatts since back in 01." -Antonio Pittman, in a later deleted tweet, back when that was a big enough deal a coach would lie about it.

Lol, 2 charges that are automatic arrests! And now he wasnt arrested for them? Bull fucking shit, he was fucking arested, alright. You cannot go to someones home, detain him on those particular charges, and then let him stay in the home that night. He def went to jail. If she were to somehow end up dead that night, the whole PD is fucked and they wouldnt do that to themselves. Also, after said arrest, he is supposed to have no contact with his wife thereafter, unless the judge allows it through ammendment. So, somewhere, there are court documents that should have bond work and an ammendment from the judge allowing him back into the home.

After reading all the scathing takes from various sports personalities, if anyone had any doubt that OSU would never cheat to get back in the series with Michigan, should put those doubts right in the fucking trash. OSU will do anything and everything to be better than Michigan................anything!

What's the paper trail like for an arrest report?

I assume the officer who responded to the call writes the initial report.

Then he gets back to the station and files it... with whom?

In order for charges to be filed, it has to go to the DA's office... but is that automatic? Presumably the cops can just withhold a report if they wanted to shield someone from charges.

And if an arrest report was altered... that's presumably getting done by someone in higher authority in the department. captain? chief?
