Delmon Young

Delmon might be hitting better but he still fucks up the little things like when a runner is on 2B, no outs - he can't move them over in a key situation. Like today for example. So screw you Delmon.

He did drive in a run earlier in the game where he did that very thing...hit through the right side.

Delmon can do no right with some of these guys. He's had a better offensive season than Peralta, Avila and Boesch, yet still takes more shit than all of those 3 combined.

All 4 of them are a joke. Especially Avila. I'm not sure i can even watch that putz go through the motions anymore...

Peralta is a 2.9 WAR, Avila 2.0, Young 0.1. You're comparing a DH to a catcher and a SS. Young is more below average relative to his position than Peralta and Avila are relative to their positions.

9th inning you got get it done. And who cares if he's been better than Perata this isn't about him. Its about Delmon. He got a single early but its the little things like hitting one to 2B or 1B not the fuckin catcher.

Delmon's dog shit.

He's swinging a hot bat. So fn what? He's garbage and always will be garbage.

Some of this is Delmon bashing is about personal feelings. He looks bad up at the plate, and he didn't show himself well publicly earlier this year. People jump on that. He is pretty flawed, but if you read some of the posts above, you would think that he does nothing but strike out and hit into double plays all of the time. Much in the same way that Inge bashing was about not liking his attitude and attention-seeking. Both of them are players with some positive attributes, and some clear negative ones as well. One thing that all of the players we have mentioned in this thread have is problems with fundamentals i.e. the small stuff like moving runners over. Unless management is going to do something about it, this is what we are stuck with.

The funny thing to me is this thread is about Delmoose having a good series against Chicago. Did he not? booger even stated that he's bashed him as much as everyone else but gave him credit for a good series. I don't really care what his WAR is or what kind of animal shit he resembles (pretty sure it's moose shit, but I digress) the thread's about a great performance against the White Sox. You want a Young has sucked for 120 games thread or a Young has blown for his entire career aside from a handful of games start it up, but this one's about him lighting up Chicago....which he did.

He does take more shit.

But Avila and Peralta are likeable guys, and that factors into it, Boesch is less likeable then the others but more so then Delmon.

Those 3 have also had their share of curses and mud-flinging from this board, so let's not pretend Delmon is the only guy getting picked on.

And as pointed out, production is relative to the position, and the only guy Delmon is on par with there is Boesch. So I guess congrats Delmon for being the second-worst everyday player on the team relative to position.

Delmon has a terrible image and persona, and it's all self-created: (1) Gets called 3rd strike, throws temper-tantrum and flings bat at an Umpire. :hitter: (2) Gets HBP and goes after pitcher, needs to be restrained [Bonus here is Bonderman hit him, but he went after his own pitcher-classy]. :argh: (3) Get's drunk on a road trip to NY and gets into a brawl after shouting racial insults.

Put this all together and add the fact that Delmon is just not a very good baseball player period [and never has been for a #1 overall pick], and you'll see why he gets more hate.

If Avila's dad wasn't the assistant GM he would have been benched a long time ago. People wanna complain about Delmon batting fifth. Why is Avila batting anywhere but the 9th spot. You can look to him for just about every loss the last couple weeks. He strands about 7 runners a game. I am sure if Infante wasn't planted at the bottom of the lineup he would have knocked some of those runs in. Laird has been around a .300 hitter all year for us and has played in maybe 30 games. It's ridiculous that they are not putting his fresh legs in there. Avila can't hit, run, throw, give effort, etc... Almost impossible to watch at this point.

Every thing you just stated is pretty off base. Laird is a .272 hitter this year in 50 games, how does that make him a .300 hitter all year? Even with Avila's massive slump he still has a higher OPS than Laird. Nobody strands 7 runners a game. Avila's OPS is only 9 points lower than Jhonny and 30 points lower than Delmon, although for 95% of the year Avila's OPS was higher than Delmons. All of this with handling catching duties the toughest position in baseball. Alex, being the son of Al, has nothing to do with Alex not being benched, there just simply isn't a better option. Neither Laird or Avila can hit lefties.

If you think Avila Sr. has anything to do with Alex's playing time, you're crazy.

In a typical smokes move....weve been waiting all year for DYs bat to heat up....and once it does he benches him. awesome.

3-20 against Masterson lifetime.

Also. Young heating up is a direct result of seeing LHP and weak RHP.

Disagree- Young's current 9 game hitting streak has included:

Homer vs E Santana-RHP-.225 ba-.687 ops vs. righties also had a double
Homer vs Mendoza-RHP-only given up 11 homers in 135 innings
Homer vs J Crain-RHP-.113 ba - .449 ops vs. righties
Homer vs Sale-LHP-16 homers in 164 innings

also, 2 doubles off of Dan Haren-RHP and a double off Matt Thorton-LHP plus he was the only Tiger with 2 hits and a extra base hit off of Kluber yesterday. Weak pitcher, but he was the ONLY one that hit him.

Yes Delmon swung at a bad pitch and managed to hit it out. It doesn't make him good. What gets forgotten is that Delmon Young is a -0.1 WAR and is barely replacement level. Perhaps with someone who is slightly above replacement, the Tigers wouldn't have entered this series 3 games behind. It's really a moot point as Young should be gone when Martinez returns next year.

Delmon's WAR is +0.3
