Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Dan Orlovsky thinks Matthew Stafford will be a Hall of Fame quarterback.
He may be a little biased, but...
During an appearance on ESPN?s radio show ?Golic and Wingo? former Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky let it slip that he thinks Matthew Stafford is a Hall of Fame player, while noting that he doesn?t think anyone should predict the Lions to finish last in the division.

The rookies, for the most part, were as expected. Frank Ragnow was back working at left guard -- although Joe Dahl took some reps there as well. Kerryon Johnson worked into a running back rotation that saw a bunch of guys involved. Those two -- along with a few undrafted players -- are the ones to watch early in camp.

Quote of the day from Lions camp -- Golden Tate on his surprise 30th birthday party. It was planned by his wife, Elise, over a span of months: "I had just come in from a round of golf and just thought I was going to hang out with the baby and the family. I come in and 'Surprise.' I had people come in from Cabo, Baltimore, Tennessee, Seattle, Denver. People flew in from all over the country just to celebrate my birthday. To turn 30 so it's kind of a big deal. Honestly I don't even celebrate birthdays because usually I'm in camp. I've been in camp the last 10-to-15 years so it's just another day for me. My birthday gift is just having a job, coming out here and playing. So very, very special to be able to do that and my wife is incredible."

Matt Patricia said he's looking for consistency at the cornerback position opposite Darius Slay. Wants consistency in both coverage and run responsibility. Said there will be situational parts as well -- and that it'll change depend on situations.

Matt Patricia opened with goal-line at practice Friday. Said it's a really tricky thing with goal-line in the league now. Said it's something "you can't wait too late to get into," and there are a lot of different formations that can be in there for what is a critical situation in the game.

Ezekiel Ansah, who is still on PUP, is working off on the side for the second straight day ? mostly hidden today behind speakers.

Lions third round pick Tracy Walker sat out practice Saturday but was spotted doing some work on the side. Also missing from practice was cornerback Nevin Lawson, who has been a starter the past two seasons. Otherwise, every player on the active roster (non-NFI or PUP) was in attendance and practicing.

The play of the day came from Lions tight end Michael Roberts, who had a difficult catch in the end zone while falling out of bounds from backup quarterback Matt Cassel over safety Miles Killebrew. It was a good stretch for Cassel, who threw two touchdown passes in the red zone period to TJ Jones on back-to-back plays following the throw to Roberts.
