Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Lions TE Eric Ebron out of practice again but a good sign for him -- he was running on the side with Ryan Spadola and Brandon Thomas. Ebron has out for the sixth straight practice after injuring his hamstring in the first practice of camp. No real need for the Lions to rush him, though. They know what they have there.

Bunch of Lions players out today: Ameer Abdullah, Haloti Ngata, T.J. Lang, Cyrus Kouandjio, Cornelius Washington among potential starters that are not practicing Sunday.

The brutality of training camp: other than quarterback, the Lions have at least one player at every position out of practice. That includes specialists, where punter Sam Martin remains on the NFI list. The highest today is five on the offensive line, including starters Taylor Decker (PUP) and T.J. Lang along with Cyrus Kouandjio, who might start at LT in Decker's place.

Best play at Lions practice: There were a bunch of impressive catches Sunday but the hardest one came in 11-on-11 when Matthew Stafford found tight end Darren Fells even though he was in double coverage close to the end zone. Fells jumped up, caught the ball and fell into the end zone for a touchdown. The Lions signed Fells for his blocking but a 6-foot-7 target in the red zone is appealing for Stafford, too. The former UC Irvine basketball player has shown his hands all camp.

Rookie report: Two undrafted free agents are starting to get some notice at defensive end: Alex Barrett and Jeremiah Valoaga. Both had good showings Saturday in the mock game and had some reps with the second team Sunday. Barrett has caught my eye more than Valoaga on more days and while he's light for the position (255 pounds), his number keeps finding its way into my notebook after he's done something good.

Overheard at Lions camp: Lions coach Jim Caldwell, normally known for his stoicism, interrupted a reporter's question (mine) when I tried to sneak one in after Lions PR said one more question. The exchange: Me: Just wanted to go back to (Kenny) Golladay for a second, his short speed... Caldwell: "You know, you're a little bit like Columbo. You know, Mike asks the last question and here comes Columbo." Me: I do what I can. That's an old reference, though. Caldwell, laughing, then answered the question. If you're interested, the TV show Columbo, starring Peter Falk, aired on NBC and ABC at different points between 1968 and 2003.
