Lions Re-Sign S Tavon Wilson.
ProFootballRumors

The Lions re-signed their second free agent Tuesday morning, bringing back last year's starting strong safety, Tavon Wilson. A source said the deal is for two years and ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported it is for $7 million -- this would be a raise from the two-year, $2.2 million deal Wilson signed with Detroit in 2016. Wilson won the starting gig over Rafael Bush in 2016 and became a reliable in-the-box run-stuffer and part of a secondary that had performed well in 2017. His re-signing gives Matt Patricia some flexibility, too, since he now has three starting-caliber safeties on the roster along with Glover Quin and Quandre Diggs, who slid into the strong safety position after Wilson was injured last season. Smart, economical re-signing by the Lions.

Haloti Ngata agrees to sign with Philadelphia Eagles.

The Lions reportedly losing Haloti Ngata in free agency to the Eagles – reported by ESPN this morning – would be a big blow to the middle of Detroit's defensive line. While Ngata was getting up there in age for an NFL player, he was still productive while healthy.
Already a need, something evidenced by Detroit's run defense struggles after Ngata's season-ending biceps injury, losing Ngata permanently creates a big hole in the middle of a defensive line that already needed reconstruction.

This could be an area the Lions look at in both free agency and the draft – particularly early. Dontari Poe is the top free agent name on the market, but the Lions could choose to try and find younger depth in free agency and target players like Washington's Vita Vea, Alabama's Da'Ron Payne or Michigan's Maurice Hurst in the first two rounds of the draft. Vea, in particular, would be a good replacement for Ngata. The starters as of today would be A'Shawn Robinson and Akeem Spence, but that could easily change.

Devon Kennard is not the splash signing some might have hoped for, but he could end up being a valuable piece to the Lions defense. He's clearly being brought in as a starter with his reported three-year, $18.75 million salary that was reported by NFL Network and confirmed by ESPN.
That could mean the end of Tahir Whitehead's time with the Lions. Kennard is a better pass rusher than Whitehead has been during his career but it's not clear who is the better run-stopper.
It also means that at least early on ? if not permanently ? Jarrad Davis is going to be the linebacker entrusted with making many of the decisions. Of course, some of that could fall to safety Glover Quin, who is the real leader of the defense, but Davis is going to be the team's key linebacker now ? something Detroit hoped for when it drafted him in the first round last year.
As far as Kennard, he's another piece for new head coach Matt Patricia. He was a strong-side linebacker a lot of his time with New York so that could be where he starts off in the Lions expected-to-be-multiple defense.

Lions GM Bob Quinn said he needed to add some defensive pieces. So far early in free agency, that's what has been happening with the re-signing of Tavon Wilson and adding LBs Christian Jones and Devon Kennard.
Those moves give Detroit more versatility on defense and show a semi-overhaul to the linebackers -- a place of import for Matt Patricia. Jones in particular is intriguing because he could play anywhere but Detroit is clearly saying it needs more from its LBs in 2018 with these early moves.

Recently signed #Lions LB Christian Jones only missed 1 tackle in the run game last year.
Best for all #NFL inside LBs that that played at least 150 snaps in the run game.

According to PFF and @PFF_Brett, Devon Kennard was mainly an edge rusher in 2017. Hybrid DE/OLB.
Actually graded lower than Whitehead. But different positions.
