Detroit Tigers Minor League Notes

The Tigers announced that they outrighted left-hander Kelvin De La Cruz to Double-A Erie. De La Cruz, 23, has posted a 4.86 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 90 2/3 innings at Erie since the Tigers claimed him off of waivers from the Indians back in March.

Al Kaline the right coach for Tigers' top prospect Nick Castellanos.

Nick Castellanos soon will get instruction from the man who played rightfield perhaps as well as anyone ever has. Al Kaline will visit Castellanos to work with him on his conversion to rightfield, Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila said Thursday night.

"Nick is working hard and is making good strides," Avila said. "Gene Roof (the roving minor league outfield instructor) is having him go through every drill and situation imaginable, and we are going to send Al Kaline in there soon for his expert advice."
Kaline, known as the flawless rightfielder in his Hall of Fame career for the Tigers, serves as an outfield instructor in spring training.

Top 20 PRE-SEASON Prospects in Review

Continuing with our mid-season reviews of our pre-season Top 20 Prospect Lists, we return to the American League with a look at the Detroit Tigers farm system.

Remember, this is the pre-season list. It is NOT a new list.

This list was originally published October 30th, 2011.

Looking forward to seeing Castellanos' approach and transition to OF up close and personal this week for three games.

would it hurt for the Tigers to call him up? ......I think so.

You don't think he'd spark the team like these other high end prospects have? .......Aggressive approach, not ready w/ glove.

don't you think he could DH against lefties instead of raburn? Could do a lot of things, not all good for him.

a month trial won't be a bad thing. ......That's one less month of everyday defensive development for 2013.

Folks, I will have more on this later this week, but Nick Castellanos desperately needs to develop defensively....DESPERATELY!

doesn't he need to readjust his plate discipline too? ........Not concerned. That will come. Very gifted hitter, will never walk a ton.

McCann hasn't looked good at all since moving to Erie. I sure hope he gets it going since we lost Brantly.

Bartony for me, seeing Avisail cut down some on the strikeouts is a good sign he's getting a better read on pitches.

sggatecl might be more of an adjustment for a catcher, higher league new pitchers to bat against and catch and game call. His k rate is similar, maybe even an uptick in power, or maybe the park factors. See how he ends up by next month.

An inside look at Casey Crosby's start Sunday v. Louisville.

Al Alburquerque pitched 1 inning in rehab start. It was a 1-2-3 inning with 2 strikeouts.

Tigers 2012 draft pick SP Jake Thompson has been shut down for the season (per reports). No injury, just an innings limit thing. Perfectly normal/expected.

Thompson has NOT been shut down for the season, was just on an extended Break. The reasoning was still innings limit, but he will start on Thursday. Again, my mistake, bad info. My apologies.
