Victor Martinez: ?I have no excuses?.
from JasonBeck'sTigersblog

His at-bat with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Sunday suggests he?s still putting good at-bats together. He fouled back three fastballs and worked into a 2-2 count after falling into an 0-2 hole. He couldn?t center one of them to send back up the middle, instead flying out to left.

It?s early, but so far, Martinez is seeing a higher percentage of fastballs than he has in the past, about nine percent over 2011 according to fangraphs. Some of that could simply be a product of the pitchers he?s facing or the early-season cold weather that prompts some pitchers to go to the fastball and try to jam hitters, but some could also be a part of the strategy against him early on.

Make no mistake, the Tigers are going to give Martinez every opportunity to get his timing back this season. Whether he hits for power is almost irrelevant; remember, he drove in 103 runs two years ago with just 12 home runs but 40 doubles. Remember, too, that it doesn?t take much run production to provide an upgrade over what Detroit received from the DH spot last season. Still, a productive Martinez is better than the vast majority of designated hitters in the league, which is all the more reason to give him time to get there.

from JasonBeck'sTigersblog. Whether he hits for power is almost irrelevant; remember, he drove in 103 runs two years ago with just 12 home runs but 40 doubles. He doesn't hit for power anymore, apparently. During the seasons prior to becoming a Tiger, he averaged ~ 23 homers per season when he played in most of the games, and wasn't injured. His highest season BA, however, was the .330 he hit as a Tiger in '11, more than 25 points over his career average of .301. I am becoming more concerned about his bat speed having declined during the year that he spent on the DL, as he has appeared to be late, if not very late on many of the FBs that he has swung @ lately.

Victor has another year left on his 4 year contract, and unfortunately his value is strictly based on his hitting prowess. He apparently cannot and will not be used as a backup catcher, even during the interleague games that the Tigers will play while being the visiting team on the road. If he only bats ~the Mendoza line or lower this season, the Tigers chances of contending, much less clinching the AL Central title and advancing in the playoffs will be in great jeopardy, IMO.

Are Baseball Players Superior to Umpires in Discriminating Balls to Strikes?
from SABR

In an effort to close the discussion on the use of technology in baseball with regards to umpire training, consider the insightful summary as offered by The New York Times: ?A mistake by a player cannot be reversed by technology. A mistake by an umpire can, if baseball would allow it.

Tigers coming home with questions in tow.
from the freep

"There?s no doubt the Tigers need V-Mart. Has he ever struggled like this before??

?In 2003, Martinez was hitting .209 after 19 games and finished with a .289 average for Cleveland. In 2005, Martinez was batting .200 after 20 games for Cleveland and still finished the season with a .305 average.?

?But what about the knee? Couldn?t that be part of it??

?Valid question. That?s why the red flag is out, but we?ll have to wait. The track record says he?ll hit.?

Victor Martinez's fifth-inning grounder that bounced off Seattle shortstop Brendan Ryan and into left field Wednesday has been changed from an error to a single.

The Tigers announced the scoring change Monday afternoon. It raised Martinez's batting average 15 points to .182.
