May 12 in Tigers and mlb history:

1932 - Carey Selph of the Chicago White Sox collects his ninth strikeout of the season. But it won't happen again. Selph will go another 89 games without striking out, to set a major league record, hitting .283 in 396 at-bats in his second and last season. Selph's record will last until 1958, when Nellie Fox sets a new mark with 98 consecutive games whitout striking out.

1948 - Tigers outfielder Doc Cramer, plays in his last game.

1955 - Toothpick Sam Jones of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first black pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter and he does it in the hardest way. In the 9th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jones walks the bases full and then strikes out Dick Groat, Roberto Clemente and Frank Thomas in a row to preserve his 4 - 0 victory.

1959 - At Yankee Stadium, Yogi Berra commits an error as his errorless streak of 148 games for a catcher comes to an end in a New York 7 - 6 loss to Cleveland.

1961 - In Yankee Stadium, Rocky Colavito sees his dad in an altercation in the stands and jumps in to defend him. He’s ejected but defiant, telling reporters, “What would you do if you saw someone belting your 60-year-old father?”

1963 - Tigers star lefthander Mickey Lolich makes his big league debut. Mickey will win 207 games in 13 seasons wearing the old English D, and lead the league in many pitching categories. He is still the all-time American League leader in strikeouts by a lefthanded pitcher with 2679.

1967 When Tiger star Al Kaline tries to steal second against the Redsox, catcher Bob Tillman throws—but hits relief pitcher John Wyatt in the back of the head. Yours truly was watching this game on a Friday and lmao.

1970 - Ernie Banks hits his 500th career home run off Pat Jarvis in the Cubs' 4 - 3 victory over Atlanta at Wrigley Field. It is also his 1,600th career RBI. The ball, after it bounces back onto the field, is retrieved by Braves left fielder Rico Carty, who gives it to Banks.

1971 - Heinie Manush dies in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 69. Manush won the American League batting championship in 1926, and twice led the league in hits. A lifetime .330 hitter, Manush gained induction to the Hall of Fame in 1964.

2001: Major League Baseball is ordered by arbitrator Alan Symonette to reinstate nine of the 22 "resigning" umpires let go two years before, and to grant back-pay for the time missed. The order also states that veteran umpires Frank Pulliand Terry Tata do not need to retire after the season, as previously planned.

Webvideo Miggy's three-run shot.
Miguel Cabrera cracks a three-run home run to deep left to extend the Tigers' lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Where the Prince/Miggy blasts from both sides of the plate landed:

Of course we Tigers fans hope to see that happen much more often, and especially when really needed....like in last night's debacle that somehow miraculously became a winnable game late, but instead both sluggers could only muster a hit apiece, being a single by Miggy and a double by Prince, neither batting in nor themselves scoring any runs...oh, well.

Alburquerque no longer a two-inning reliever.
DETROIT -- The days of Al Alburquerque as a two-inning reliever in the Tigers bullpen appear to be over. As hard as Tigers manager Jim Leyland is trying to sort out roles in his relief corps, he has no plans to stretch out Alburquerque again.

The high-strikeout right-hander with the nasty slider looked like he was poised to cover multiple innings with regularity for a stretch in late April, getting at least five outs in three consecutive appearances from April 17 to April 24. That included two perfect innings and five strikeouts against the Angels, arguably the best outing of his Tiger tenure.

Alburquerque has yet to post a perfect inning since. He has allowed two runs over five innings with nine strikeouts since, but it's the baserunner total -- eight walks and seven hits allowed -- that has been the concern.

The Indians scored what turned out to be a critical insurance run off Alburquerque in the eighth inning on Saturday after he finished the seventh. He began the eighth with a four-pitch walk to Jason Kipnis, who eventually scored on a Jason Giambi sacrifice fly.

Jackson gets day off to rest sore hamstring.
DETROIT -- The Tigers aren't hamstrung with Austin Jackson just yet, but he's enough of a concern that manager Jim Leyland wants to keep him from becoming an injury loss.
Jackson still has soreness in his right hamstring, which has bothered him for a week. He could have played Sunday's series finale against the Indians, but Leyland wanted to give him a day off as a preventative measure so that he doesn't get to the point that he can't play.
"He can go," Leyland said, "but it's hard for him to really burn into that extra gear. So I'm just giving him a day off for precautionary reasons."
Don Kelly started in center with Jackson out. Andy Dirks moved up to the leadoff spot, as he did when Jackson sat for a game last weekend in Houston.

Leyland shares humorous story about late mom.
DETROIT -- On the day Major League Baseball players use pink equipment as part of it's Mothers Day mission to promote breast cancer awareness, Tigers manager Jim Leyland retold one of his favorite stories about his late mom, who tried to pick up his spirits during one of his seasons managing in the Tigers farm system.
One year I was with the Tigers, hoping to come up here as a coach," Leyland said. "Sparky [Anderson] had his guys. I said, 'Well, mom, I'm not going to the big leagues again this year. They have [Alex] Grammas coaching third and [Dick] Tracewski coaching first. And she said, 'Well, don't they need a second-base coach?'"

Among the Tigers using pink bats on Sunday was Torii Hunter, whose wife lost her grandmother to breast cancer. If it promotes awareness, Hunter is all for pink.
"This is baseball. This is entertainment. This is The Show," Hunter said. "Just for one day, just for the cause, why not?"
If he gets some hits out of the bats, he joked, he might try to keep them around.
