Jose Valverde doesn't understand the infatuation with his split-finger.
from the Oakland Press

?We think we need to get him in better pitching shape. Not physical shape ? he looks good, physically. He?s not too heavy or out of shape physically. ... Valverde?s in good shape, but not probably pitching shape. ... We felt like it?s important to get him out there and pitch him a little bit, get his arm strength up,? Leyland said.

He's in good shape for a Buddha.

May 16 in Tigers and mlb history:

1912 - Due to his assault on Claude Luecker, a handicapped fan and a regular heckler, Ty Cobb is suspended. Although today's game is rained out, the Tigers meet in Philadelphia, voting to boycott future games if the "Georgia Peach" is not allowed to play.

1931: At Detroit, Tommy Bridges gives up three hits in stopping the Yankees 3 - 1, and dropping the Bombers to second place as they will not retake first.

1937: In Kansas City, Hilton Smith pitches a no-hitter as the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Chicago American Giants, 4 - 0. Smith allows only one Chicago batter to reach base when he walks Melvin Powell in the 4th. Powell is erased on a double play and Smith faces the minimum 27 men. Sug Cornelius pitches a three-hitter in a losing cause.

1937: Browns 3B Harlond Clift equals the American League record at the hot corner with nine assists in a 5 - 4 loss to theTigers. A fumble and late throw in the 1st inning would have given him a 10th assist. By the end of the season, Clift will set a new record for total chances and the still-standing mark of 405 assists. The Tigers' Gee Walker has a single to run his hitting streak to 21 games.

1966 - Chuck Dressen suffers his second heart attack in two years. Coach Bob Swift again takes the helm of the Tigers.

1978: The Tigers top Seattle, 4 - 2, in 16 innings, winning on a home run by Lance Parrish. Steve Foucault, who pitches the last three innings, gets the win. Relief ace John Hiller tosses 6 2/3 shutout innings.

Tigers have optioned RHP Al Alburquerque to Toledo, and recalled the contract of RHP Evan Reed.

Evan Reed's Toledo stats: 21 IP, 7 BB, 28 K's, 3.00 ERA.
Reed's FB sits anywhere between 91-95 with two average off-speed pitches, with one being the slider.

Optioned Al Alburquerque (RHP) to Toledo
Recalled Evan Reed (RHP) from Toledo
Analysis:
Alburquerque?s struggles as of late have been mounting, allowing an earned run in each of his last three appearances, including taking the loss for yielding the go-ahead run to Houston in Wednesday?s match-up. Alburquerque had looked excellent as recently as a few weeks ago, with three straight appearances of no runs allowed with ten struck out and no walks, but things took a turn for the worse shortly after that.

Reed was a valuable middle reliever for the Mud Hens thus far this season, posting a 3.00 ERA in 14 games, with 28 strikeouts to just seven walks. Reed features a low to mid 90s fastball with a slider that can be solid at times but has lacked consistency in the past. If his command is on, he could be a very valuable 7th inning arm for the team, but he?s also now on his third organization at 27 years of age, so his prospect status is a bit questionable.
