Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Leyland has utmost respect for Rangers.
Jim Leyland doesn't want to make too much of a mid-May series between a couple of division-leading teams, but what the Rangers have accomplished over the past few years has earned them a new-found respect from the veteran major league manager.

"I look at this as [the Rangers] have a real, real, really good team and a real tough opponent," Leyland said before opening up a four-game series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Thursday night. "I respect everybody we play, but you have to respect this team after what they've done the last few years and what they've done this year where they don't have Josh [Hamilton] back and they've made some moves and they just keep marching on.

"That said, we think we have a pretty good team, too."

Leyland was especially complimentary of Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler and third baseman Adrian Beltre.

"This is my personal opinion, but I think Kinsler is one of the best players in the American League," Leyland said. "He's a hell of a player. I just have the utmost respect for him.

"He does everything. He plays second good, he's got power, he's got speed. He plays hard every time I've ever seen him. I think he's really a top-notch player. I think he's quietly become one of the better players in the league."

Beltre, Leyland noted, is known throughout the league for his ability both offensively and defensively.

"The third baseman is without question one of the best players in the American League," Leyland said. "I won't say who it was, but I had one of my coaches tell me the other day that he is one of the five best players in the American League.

"He's just a terrific player. He's a terrific defender and he's a terrific hitter. We talk about Beltre all the time. Fortunately for us, we've got a pretty good player playing third base, too."

Tigers' starting pitchers began Thursday night's game leading the league with a 3.32 ERA, 252 strikeouts and 26 quality starts and were tied for the lead with 19 wins.

The No. 9 spot in the Tigers' batting order is producing at a .306 clip, with eight doubles, four triples, four homers and 22 RBIs.

May 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903 - Cool Papa Bell is born in Starkville, Mississippi. Bell will enjoy a successful career in the Negro Leagues from 1922 to 1946. An outfielderwith blazing speed and the first Mexican League Triple Crown winner, Bell will be selected to the Hall of Fame in 1974.

1925 - At League Park, Tris Speaker of the Cleveland Indians collects his 3,000th hit off Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators.

1934 Rogers Hornsby hits his 300th career home run. He’s the first National Leaguer to do so, and third overall, behind Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

1945 - For the fourth time in four days, every American League game is postponed because of rain.

1961 - Roger Maris hits his first home run of the season at Yankee Stadium (and fourth overall) on his way to a major league season-record 61.

1970 - During a 7 - 6 Atlanta loss to Cincinnati in the second game of a doubleheader, Hank Aaron collects his 3,000th career hit and his 500th home run. Aaron, the ninth man to amass 3,000 hits, is the first to also have 500 home runs.

1998 - David Wells pitches the 13th perfect game in modern major league history as the Yankees beat Minnesota, 4 - 0. Wells, whose "perfecto" is the first by a Yankees pitcher since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, also sets anAmerican League record by retiring 37 batters in a row, dating back to his start on May 12th against Kansas City.

2000 Cal Ripken passes up Hank Aaron by grounding into his 329th double play, the new record. Ripken will retire with 350 GIDP, which is still the record.

2001: Ike Brown dies from cancer in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 59. A popular member of the Detroit Tigers for six seasons, Brown was one of the last Negro League players still active in the majors during the 1970s, and the last to make his major league debut. The versatile Brown played every infield and outfield position but center field during his Tigers stint.

2011: Harmon Killebrew, one of the great sluggers of the 1960s with 573 career home runs, passes away from cancer at 74 in Scottsdale, AZ. The gentle and universally-like "Killer", who spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Twins, was the 1969 AL MVP and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984.

The Blue Jays Lineup vs. the Tigers Lineup
At this point in the season, all of these opponent-gauging metrics seem to come in team-wide waves. One of those stats is Opponent On Base Percentage (oppOBP), which measures the aggregate On Base Percentage of all of the pitchers a batter has faced for the year. The Blue Jays have six of the 10 lowest oppOBP?s in major league baseball, and nine of the bottom 18, whereas Detroit actually has six of the top seven performers in the statistic.

The truth of the matter is the Blue Jays have just faced one of the hardest pitching schedules in baseball so far this year, and the Tigers have faced one of the easiest. Players like Brett Lawrie, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Melky Cabrera have all been adversely affected by that fact, and players like Alex Avila, Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter have all been greatly helped by it.

For example, the difference between Lawrie?s oppOBP (.298) and Torii Hunter?s (.330) makes the 100 point disparity in their OBPs more understandable?Hunter has faced significantly worse competition than Lawrie.

While the ratio of how much oppOBP affects a player?s actual OBP isn?t one to one, a shrewd fantasy owner should acknowledge that it has some tangible effect and downgrade some of what Hunter has accomplished this year, while upgrading what Lawrie has done. Both oppOBP and oppSLG should be used as a general tool to modify a player?s value slightly rather than to overhaul it entirely.

No disasters, but Detroit Tigers still have their issues.
from the OaklandPress

Tigers are capable but prone to implode on O, D, and especially pitching, ala last nights game. What bothers me is the relatively few big comebacks and walkoff wins that they have so far. I remember their championship teams, especially '68, when no opponent's lead was insurmountable, and I always knew that there was a good chance that team would find a way to win more often than not. I don't get the same vibe from this season's version and too often feel like they lack a killer instinct overall. Who are their pesky hitters who are almost always tough outs? Miggy? Prince? Hunter? Peralta? Tui?

Too many times they take leads early in games, then sit on them while their opponents chip away until they tie or take the lead. Tigers also have had a long stretch of games when they repeatedly failed to score, or only scored on errors or walks when they had bases loaded or had RISP on 2nd and/or 3rd, regardless of how many outs there were.

I doubt that there were many fans who thought that the Tigers would easily defeat the rump-rangers in their ballpark with their ace on the mound. But unfortunately that is exactly what a championship team does during the season, win games and series, especially when on the road, that they aren't expected or heavily favored to.
