Tigers SP Max Scherzer on whether he'd ever retired 27 straight over two starts, something he almost pulled off:
"I don?t think I have. That?s just something where I was in a groove. Unfortunately, when you talk about that second inning, I hate that I walked Morneau to lead off the inning, and I hate even more that I walked Doumit. I?m always a guy that wants to put the hitters in a defensive mode, and attack. And I hate giving free passes in those type of situations. It was unfortunate that it happened, but I also thought I made some big pitches to get out of that inning."

Tigers SP Max Scherzer downplays going to 7-0 on the season:
"That?s the thing ? 7-0?s a nice thing, but I don?t really hang my hat on that. If I was 0-7, and still pitching well, giving my team a chance to win, I?d still be proud of it. For me, it?s all about going out there, and making sure I?m going deep into games, keeping their offense down. I?ve been doing that for the most part this year."

May 27 in Tigers and mlb history:

1937 - Carl Hubbell earns his 24th consecutive victory over two seasons and Mel Ott hits a 9th-inning home run as the New York Giants defeat theCincinnati Reds, 3 - 2. Hubbell wins the game in relief. His 24-win string started on July 17, 1936.

1939 - For the first time in his career, Charlie Gehringer of the Detroit Tigers hits for the cycle, in a 12 - 5 win against the St. Louis Browns. Gehringer does it in order - single, double, triple, home run.

1968 - Major League Baseball expands outside the confines of the United States as the National League announcesexpansion for the first time in seven years, awarding franchises to Montreal as well as San Diego, to begin play next season.

2004 - Carlos Pe?a of the Detroit Tigers goes 6 for 6 with two home runs, five RBI and four runs in a 17 - 7 victory over Kansas City.

Tigers 6 - Twins 1: After 32 games, Torii Hunter ended one of his longest homer droughts with an oppo blast in the 1st, and Max Scherzer didn?t need much more to win his 7th straight decision (a personal best) without a loss this year. Avisail Garcia plumped the pillow in the 6th with a pinch-hit 3-run triple to the farthest reaches, after fouling off a pair with 2 strikes. Minnesota got 3 hits in Scherzer?s 6 stanzas and none off the bullpen, with another stout long-relief stint by Drew Smyly (2.1 IP, 3 Ks), who has a 2.30 ERA in 31 IP while waiting for a rotation shot. (Not that having a good long reliever is a problem.)
